Field Day happened on Saturday in Görlitzer Park and looking back through these photos, what stands out most is how much of it would never show up on a highlight reel of a productive adult life.

We didn’t have to stage any of the pictures because these lovely humans decided, f-it, I’m just going to let go and play like no one is watching, and all of them moving their bodies without a specific goal, all because it felt good in that specific moment.

I keep coming back to a simple question, which is when exactly we decided that moving our bodies only counts if it produces something measurable, a pace, a personal best, a number on a screen that proves the hour was worth having.

As kids nobody needed convincing to run around a field for no reason, and nobody was tracking whether the running was efficient.

At some point play without an outcome started to feel like time that could have been spent optimizing something else instead, and that feels like a real loss to me, not a small one.

None of the games on Saturday kept score in any way that mattered, and despite heavy winds and the ever threatening Berlin rain, nobody could tell you who actually won what or particularly cared to find out, because that was never what anyone signed up for.

141 people showed up just to freakin’ move - without the need to post their wins - and that’s Field Day 🙂

@on for giving us the grant to make adults move with fun and @sunday_natural @yoshien for keeping us moving and hydrated. Also shoutout to @bagelbro__berlin for delicious bagels.

None of this would be possible without our amazing volunteers and @sport365berlin staff and teachers and my partner in crime @einfachnurpetra. It’s an amazing space and you should visit it for all the activities absolutely free! We raised money for the org and will also donate to make the space welcoming for all.

what a day! there is no way our first avluv shoot would have been so amazing without this stellar team of women who volunteered their time and expertise (some at very short notice!)

as we dealt with setback after setback, our models patiently waited while we had to postpone the shoot TWICE, and the incredible Sólveig stepped in last minute when our photographer dropped out.

we still can’t believe it happened, and how much fun it really was. the biggest thank you to everyone involved for bringing your vibes and helping us build avluv so beautifully 😻

it finally happened 😻

after all the wrong samples, last minute cancellations and numerous other setbacks, we finally held avluv’s first photoshoot.

9 women from 9 countries came together to make something special happen, and we are so grateful to the whole team for their patience, willingness to go along with our vision, and the huge amount of fun they all brought to the shoot.

Happy 2nd anniversary to myself 🐞
Two years ago, I made a choice that changed my entire life. Sometimes I think about who I would be today if I hadn’t made that decision — and honestly, I don’t think I would recognize that version of myself.
Instead of following the plan, I chose something different. Looking back now, it feels like the first time I truly put myself first. Not expectations. Not other people’s needs. Just me.
That moment became the start of a long journey to finding myself again. Over these two years, I’ve learned how to love my life again, how to love myself, and how important the right people around you can be.
It definitely hasn’t all been easy. There were moments where I felt lost and struggled with depression because I had no clear idea of where my life was going. Living without a fixed plan can feel terrifying sometimes — but also incredibly freeing.
In these two years, I’ve done things I never thought I was capable of. I started loving things out loud, standing up for myself, and getting back up every single time I fell.
One thing I know for sure now: we can always start over. But nobody can do it for us except ourselves.
So let’s be brave 🌻

Curious to know about other immigrant children's experience of having to be the parent in the family, especially when growing up in a country where the native tongue differed from the language spoken at home.

Going to school in Canada from the very beginning meant that I already knew more English from a young age than my parents did, so I was the one translating letters, preparing them for parent-teacher meetings, and explaining what my achievements in school meant.

Later when my sister was born, I was the one who made sure she had access to things that other Canadian children had access to - things that my brother and I didn't have - like gifts from Santa, money from the tooth fairy, help with homework.

Looking back, I see how these responsibilities shaped my behaviours and personality - how could they not?

If you've read my book Restaurant Kid, you'll know that New Year's Eve is the busiest day of the year at my family's restaurant.

I'm pleased to report we survived another one, folks! No one got mad or tripped on a rug and everything was more or less on time. I think (maybe?) we've finally figured it out after 34 years.

'Tis the season to be slowing down, having marathon couch sessions, and eating to our hearts' content.

At some point, however, guilt will niggle its way into our subconscience and make us feel bad about ourselves and our life's choices. "You just wasted another day." "You didn't move at all, even though you ate so much!" "You're so lazy!"

Here are my five tips to be a *bit* more active and to feel less guilt this holiday season! 🎄🎁🕯

1. Know that you deserve rest. 😴 This is probably one of the few times in the year when you have the opportunity to slow down. Taking advantage of this time does not mean you're lazy! Slow down, replenish your energy, and nourish yourself.

2. Add extra movement when you get up from the couch to get the blood flowing. 💃🏻 For example, do ten squats before laying back down or have a dance break to your favourite song. Movement is movement!

3. Plan for a longer activity once a day, like walking around the neighborhood, shoveling snow, or doing a 10-minute YouTube video. More often than not, the activity will feel good and you'll want to do more of it. 😌

4. Have a movement buddy so you can motivate each other to move, especially when it's extra-cold out. 🥶

5. Practice self-compassion. No matter what you decide to do (or not), try not to judge yourself. If you're finding that there's a lot of negative self-talk happening, ask yourself what you would say to a friend in a similar situation. I bet you'd be a lot nicer to your friend than to yourself! So be your own friend in those instances when guilt is present. 🤗
