Every release from @theleaflibrary feels like an exploration of pop music’s possibilities, and each one seems to bring us closer to the realisation that those possibilities are endless. The archival nature of Library Music is the perfect way of experiencing the range of The Leaf Library’s work and the sonic versatility they command.
The disparate nature of these tracks is part of their appeal: “Versatile Clouds” runs 22 minutes, with strings and hints of early-2000s folktronica. “The Long Dead King” sounds like a disco in a burial mound 🪦 while album closer, “Tired Ghost in Orbit”, is a retooled older song turned into a nine-minute space jam
Out now on @wiaiwya. Thomas ends on the hope that “Volume Two” isn’t the final instalment. Read the full review at klofmag.com, link in bio.

I think I discovered The Leaf Library during Covid, although they have been around longer than that, so I was off radar for a time. Electronic indie pop with hints of Stereolab at times. They've just released Volume 2 of a compilation of their tracks which you won't find on Spotify, so head over to Bandcamp if you want to check them out. @theleaflibrary

They're also pretty good live, though don't seem to play too often. Thiis was a one gig so we were lucky.

Pics and a couple of vids.

Really honoured to see my photo of The Leaf Library (taken at their Divine Schism gig at Common Ground in April) used as an insert in their new compilation album, Library Music: Vol. 2.

It’s a beautifully packaged album, can’t wait to listen to it.

So strange to believe it’s 25 years since 9-11. The world has changed so much since then and, in most respects, not for the better. Such pointless loss of life, and so many lives ruined in the endless wars that have followed it.

My only time in New York was in May 2001 with Amanda and Matt from Saloon to mix what would be Saloon’s debut album ‘This Is What We Call Progress’ with Andrew and Bobby from Mahogany.

Annoyingly I can’t seem to find many photos from the trip other than some we used for the Saloon Tim Burgess listening party a couple of years ago (not that I took many photos back in 2001 anyway). Hopefully the rest will turn up.

While we were there, we didn’t see much of NYC anyway - we were there very much for the business of mixing the album. We also didn’t have much money either. I do remember the World Trade Centre was one of the landmarks I wished to see more than anything, mostly because of its appearance in the weird Tom Hanks ‘Mazes and Monsters’ film about the dangers of playing Dungeons & Dragons (those were simpler times). I do remember the towers looming on the horizon as our cab took us from the airport towards Brooklyn.

Partly because we didn’t have much money, we spent much of our down-time on the roof taking in the Manhattan skyline of 2001, which you can see in Photo 1. The towers would be out of shot on the left.

Photo 2 is Amanda, me and Matt on the subway. Photo 3 is me in the studio on one of Andrew’s Shergold guitars.

I have great memories of our time in New York, whenever I see a jar of Pepto Bismol it takes me back to a pharmacy in Williamsburg. And ‘(This is) What We Call Progress’ as well as being the biggest seller, is still probably my favourite album of my career. The LP has long, long since sold out but the CD (we made a lot of them) is still available from @darlarecords

Really looking forward to this one! Playing dub, reggae and electronics (with soul, funk and indie also finding their way into the mix) alongside Matt Ashton, guitarist and co-founder of North London drone pop collective @theleaflibrary, and friends, for our Bank Holiday Special session at @woodstbear

This little bar is a proper hidden gem in Walthamstow: not crazy loud, so you can actually chat, catch up and meet people while the music plays. Amazing beers and always a lovely crowd. Our previous GLAC sessions here have honestly been so nice that you shouldn’t miss this one!

North London’s The Leaf Library craft immersive, melodic drone-pop built from chiming guitars, pulsing electronics, looping drones and carefully layered noise. Their music sits in a hazy space between delicacy and intensity, unfolding slowly with a hypnotic, almost cinematic quality. On record, they balance warmth and experimentation, while their live shows often push these textures into something louder, more volatile and physically immersive.

Their latest album After The Rain, Strange Seeds received widespread acclaim, including 4★ from MOJO, 9/10 from Uncut and praise from The Quietus, cementing their reputation as one of the UK’s most quietly inventive underground acts.
