POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A Maryland artist turned familiar pink, blue and white hospital blankets for newborn babies into a powerful call to action.

Lex Marie, of Prince George's County, used the blankets to create what she calls the Black maternal health flag. The artwork evokes the American flag, with alternating black stripes and hospital blanket strips.

“Black maternal health deserved a symbol and something to bring awareness," she said.

Marie said she first made the flag two years ago and that combining motherhood and artistry felt “naturally aligned.” She said as her son grows up, she is confronting issues raising a Black boy in the U.S. and wants to continue to advocate for him and other children and mothers.

She said she wants the flag to become an emblem for protecting Black maternal health.

Marie created merchandise to continue to spread awareness, after supporters requested prints, pins, bumper stickers and T-shirts.

She said she hopes the flag will open people’s eyes to the crisis in a new way.

“Sometimes it’s not the stats. Sometimes it’s not the words. Sometimes it takes an image in order to really get to the core of someone’s feelings,” she said.

Grateful to have been invited to the McColl Center for a fiber/textile exchange with these beautiful women in the arts. So many different practices and stories, all connected by cloth, thread, memory, and making.

Just sharing these photos now, but I think they’re getting printed + framed. Some moments deserve to live somewhere other than the camera roll. 💐

SAVE THE DATE | NOVEMBER 7

The Bishop Gallery is thrilled to announce Because I Said So, a solo exhibition by Lex Marie, curated by Cornelia Stokes.

Through reclaimed belts, thrifted uniforms, and other objects of childhood, Marie examines corporal punishment, intergenerational trauma, and the systems of discipline we inherit, normalize, and pass forward.

At the center of the exhibition is the belt—an object both ordinary and charged, existing at the intersection of care and control, protection and punishment.

What happens when the practices meant to protect us are the very ones we must learn to question?

Opening Reception
Saturday, November 7, 2026 | 6–9 PM

The Bishop Gallery
630 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

Join us for an exhibition that confronts difficult truths about Black childhood, authority, vulnerability, and the complexities of care.

“Source Material” by @nommohouse for @dcdesignweek

‘what do we make from what we are given?’ is the phrase I carried with me as we went through this exhibition.

Beautifully curated, yet perfectly executed, art stems from a source. Whether that be references, memories, stories, or nostalgia, it was amazing to see how these artists transformed their materials into masterpieces!

This exhibition will be on display through Nov 15th. Make sure to check it out!
