I’ve had so many meaningful conversations with incredible people over these past few months. Speaking publicly about my art, when I literally create art because I don’t always have the words to express how I feel, has been an experience, to say the least. Still, I’m learning, stretching, and growing 💛 by @thelexmarie

SAVE THE DATE | NOVEMBER 7

The Bishop Gallery is thrilled to announce Because I Said So, a solo exhibition by Lex Marie, curated by Cornelia Stokes.

Through reclaimed belts, thrifted uniforms, and other objects of childhood, Marie examines corporal punishment, intergenerational trauma, and the systems of discipline we inherit, normalize, and pass forward.

At the center of the exhibition is the belt—an object both ordinary and charged, existing at the intersection of care and control, protection and punishment.

What happens when the practices meant to protect us are the very ones we must learn to question?

Opening Reception
Saturday, November 7, 2026 | 6–9 PM

The Bishop Gallery
630 Flushing Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

Join us for an exhibition that confronts difficult truths about Black childhood, authority, vulnerability, and the complexities of care.

Join us in welcoming Spring 2026 Artist-in-Residence Lex Marie @thelexmarie who is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, installation, and painting, exploring how Black childhood is shaped by adultification, discipline, surveillance, and systemic inequity.

“My work is a testament to the profound impact of adultification biases, food insecurity, and the systemic challenges entrenched in American institutions,” Marie says.

Rooted in her lived experience as a Black mother, Marie’s practice transforms everyday and reclaimed materials - school uniforms, pencils, belts, report cards, hospital blankets - into charged objects that reveal the hidden curriculum embedded within systems of care and control. By elevating the overlooked and repurposing the familiar, she constructs a visual language that bridges personal archive and public history. Her work confronts difficult truths while remaining accessible, using color, texture, and material memory to invite both reflection and dialogue across generations.

It’s always an amazing time supporting @mocaarlington 💛 I imagine at some point artists like to look back and consider which institutions were the most instrumental and supportive of their careers. @mocaarlington is where I had my first residency, first independent studio, and my first solo museum exhibition. Forever grateful to have this institution be such a meaningful part of my story. by @thelexmarie

Introducing “Sown Together: New Voices in Contemporary Textile Art,” a collaborative exhibition presented by the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and McColl Center, opening
September 11, 2026.

Co-curated by Dr. Anita N. Bateman, Vice President of Creative Direction at the Gantt Center, and artist and McColl Center President + CEO Asa Jackson, the exhibition grew from the convergence of two complementary curatorial initiatives. A spring residency at McColl Center brought together a cohort of fiber artists for shared learning, dialogue, workshops, and cultural exchange, while the Gantt Center was simultaneously developing an exhibition focused on contemporary textile practices. Featuring 16 artists selected across both organizations, “Sown Together” assembles textile works that explore identity, memory, migration, and the African diaspora through innovative material practices. Drawing on the dual meanings of sown and sewn - homophones that evoke both the planting of seeds and the joining of the exhibition, it considers textile as both material and metaphor. Just as seeds are planted to cultivate future growth, featured artists draw on lived histories to advance new perspectives on Black identity and belonging.

Featuring: Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola, Joke Amusan, April Bey, William Evans, MarieAnn Fluker (Flower), Enam Gbewonyo, Asa Jackson, Kandy G Lopez, Lex Marie, Ambrose Rhapsody Murray, Kosisochukwu Nnebe, Josie Love Roebuck, Nastassja Swift, Cyle Warner, Andrew Wilson, and Qualeasha Wood. taken in Charlotte, North Carolina by @thelexmarie
