Bold claim, but I’d say this was one of my top 3 Frankfurts EVER. From global launches to special musical guests, and hours-long catchups (never-ending stories) with old friends and gaining a new gay nibbling, to book fair tarot predictions and MULTIPLE women falling at my feet… it was pure magic. And you guys, my life-long dream of becoming a book fair influencer is FINALLY coming true. You are not ready for this. Thank you thank you, I miss you all, can’t wait to do it again next year! 💕🥂👯📚

me in between sobs (cancer moon). my cup runneth over fr. i’ve been softly building my first solo show since 2024 and poured into it my whole tender heart. i slept 10 hours last night and my apartment smells like fresh flowers. my parents flew in for the big night and loved yapping with so many of y’all. if you pulled up to the opening, thank you so much, truly. it means the world to me. it’s so f’ing cold outside and you still came to witness, noses dripping n all 😭 and if you wiped my tears (or nose), just know i love you. ❤️💙

deepest gratitude to jil and sydney at @baxterstccny for believing in this project and for your support throughout my 2025 residency; du gomes, gladys edeh, jean fall, jihan el-tahri, kojo ade, makeda yezalaleul, nyareeta gach, onyekachi iloh, tisa chigaga, zainab jah for sharing your stories and allowing me to unearth our entanglement; @massmoca and @africanfilmfest at @filmlinc for supporting early iterations of this project in 2024; mahen, zamzam, tisa, and devin at AFF for your care in organizing a community archive with me; jesse, james, michael, max, eric, and tara for the space, means and support to materially realize my vision for this installation; @rachelmuses, @llisonchan and @lsy.liu for your consultation and friendship; dad and mum for being the OG archivists of our family and documenting the most seemingly mundane yet important parts of our lives; and grandma and alhaja, our matriarchs resting in peace, power and continuity. ❤️💙

“a litany for past suns” is on view at @baxterstccny until april 2nd. pull up! more soon ❤️💙

This week we talked to @thelifeofxi, currently Audiobooks Partnerships @spotify and the mind being @livecultures.art check out the article to her takes on the brands that do dance right, brands than are aren’t trying too hard and her favorite neighborhood juice spot.

Make sure to subscribe to @livecultures.art to continue to hear her takes on the coolest performance work in the city and maybe even take a field trip with her this February!

New year, new arts and culture recommendations in NYC. If you’re looking to #staycultured in 2026, January is prime time.

This month I’m doubling down on radical, ground breaking live art. In addition to the performances in this month’s list, I’ll also be highlighting some of the many performance festivals championing artistic risk taking and experimentation including
- @prototypefest for contemporary opera
- @nylivearts’ Live Artery for contemporary dance (ft. January picks from @gemgemdi and @kashiakancey, I also recommend catching @billtjonesarniezaneco)
- @utrfest and @exponentialfestival for experimental theater
- Out-FRONT! by @pioneersgoeast for all things radical queer dance, performance art and film.

(Stay tuned for festival starter packs throughout the month with suggestions on where to start!)

What a year 2025 has been! This year Live Cultures found its stride bringing almost 200 New Yorkers together through theater.

Thank you to all the incredible theaters and organizations that partnered with us, to everyone who showed up to field trips and supported the substack, and most importantly to the artists who so generously and craftfully shared their art with us.

Here is but a snippet of highlights from this year in theater. Bop over to livecultures.substack for the rundown.

Cheers to 2026 🍾

2025! What a year, with many leaps of faith (and it wasn’t even a Leap Year). A new job and a new roommate 🤭 Old friends in new places like Toronto, Palm Springs, Stockholm, and Amsterdam. Some familiar backdrops like Chicago, North Carolina, the Pines, and the Crown Inn. There were many horrors in the world this year, but the world keeps spinning, and I’m so lucky to get to spin alongside you all. Thank you so much 🙏 Over and out 🫡
