Had the honor of sitting down and talking with @emorydouglasartist , the legendary artist behind the visual language of the Black Panther Party and its Minister of Culture, at the awesome @minnesotastreetproject during @moadsf / @nexussfbay for SF / Bay Area Black Art Week. Thank you, @jacforbes , for the invite! Always grateful for opportunities to listen, learn, and spend time with our stewards of the arts. Happy I got to see some familiar faces and artworks, too!

Also made it over to the new @hauserwirth in Palo Alto to check out Calder | O’Keeffe.

Anyway, Go Valkyries!

2025 Center Fellow Little Walt Dog (L.W.D.) is in "Playing," a group exhibition at @V1Gallery in Copenhagen curated by Marcus Jahmal, and it closes soon on September 26.

The show takes its cue from Philip Guston's idea that "this serious play, which we call art, can't be static," and brings together sixteen artists who continuously reinvent their practice. It draws on the principles of the CoBrA movement: spontaneity, intuition, primal gesture, folk traditions, art brut and a resistance to fixed stylistic identity. The painters in it treat the studio as an experimental space where instinct and imagination hold equal weight to intellectual consideration, and where color, gesture and mark-making become tools of discovery.

"Playing" is on view through September 26 at V1 Gallery, Slagtehusgade 44D, Copenhagen. More at the link in bio.

L.W.D (aka Little Walt Dog @thelonesomelemon) first began painting in 2019, after thirty years of incarceration. In “Downtown Babylon,” closing today at @silkelindner.nyc, the artist pays tribute to his upbringing in Watts, Torrance, Gardena, and Compton–reconciling experiences of injustice with nostalgia, state control with resistance through a series of raw wood sculptures built from driftwood gathered in the aftermath of the Los Angeles fires, as though fragments of ancient Babylon have washed ashore. In Rastafari belief, Babylon is the exploitative capitalist order that oppresses and extracts—the structure that divides and subjugates the people of African descent. In L.W.D’s work, it is a city with no horizon, a collection of fragments, where joy and violence are forced to coexist.
