✨ FUNDER SPOTLIGHT: @tnartscommission ✨

The Hoodoo Heritage Festival is proud to be supported in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission through its Arts Project Support grant program.

This support helps us create a space where African American history, Hoodoo, folklore, music, movement, scholarship, art, and living cultural traditions can be preserved, celebrated, and shared within our community.

Funding the arts also means funding the people who keep our culture alive — our artists, performers, educators, scholars, tradition bearers, and community organizations.

We are grateful to the Tennessee Arts Commission for investing in the 2026 Hoodoo Heritage Festival and helping us bring this year’s vision to life right here in Nashville. 🖤

🎶 31 Days of Hoodoo | Day 22: Learn a Black Spiritual

Before gospel, before blues, there were the spirituals.

Born from the experiences of enslaved African Americans, spirituals carried faith, grief, resistance, hope, memory and survival through generations. They were sung in worship, in community and through the everyday realities of Black life.

And right here in Nashville, the Fisk Jubilee Singers helped carry these songs around the world.

Beginning in 1871, the original Jubilee Singers left Fisk University to tour and raise desperately needed funds for the school. They introduced audiences across the United States and Europe to the spirituals of enslaved Black Americans and helped preserve a musical tradition that would profoundly influence American music.

And here’s some Nashville history that gets left out far too often:

Nashville’s identity as a “Music City” did not begin with country music.

The story reaches back to the Fisk Jubilee Singers, a group of Black singers carrying Black spirituals around the world. During their 1873 European tour, after hearing them perform, Queen Victoria is reported to have remarked that they must come from a “musical city.” Their international success helped establish Nashville’s reputation as a city of music decades before the rise of the Grand Ole Opry and Nashville’s country-music industry.

So when we talk about Nashville as Music City, Black music belongs at the beginning of that story.

Today’s practice is simple:

🎵 Choose a Black spiritual.
🎵 Listen to it intentionally.
🎵 Learn the words.
🎵 Learn its history.

Try “Steal Away,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Go Down, Moses,” “Wade in the Water,” or another spiritual passed down through our communities.

These songs aren’t simply old music. They are cultural inheritance—and part of the foundation of Music City itself.

🖤 31 Days of Hoodoo | Day 21: Honor the Fathers

Remember the men who came before you.

Our fathers. Our grandfathers. Our great-grandfathers. The uncles, elders, and men whose names, stories, lessons, labor, protection, mistakes, survival, and traditions became part of what we inherited.

Ancestor reverence isn’t only about the ancestors whose names appear in history books. It begins with our own people.

Today, take a moment to honor the men in your ancestral line. Speak their names. Look at an old photograph. Ask an elder about the men you never got to meet. Learn where they lived, what they did, what they survived, and what they passed down.

Not every ancestor was perfect. Honoring our lineage does not require pretending they were. It means remembering that we come from somewhere—and somebody.
