A word about Hoodoo Heritage Festival and the space we are creating. 🖤

Hoodoo is a CLOSED Black American spiritual and folk tradition, born from the survival, resistance, healing practices, ancestral knowledge and spiritual lives of Black people in America.

Hoodoo Heritage Festival was created to preserve, teach and celebrate that heritage. This is not simply a themed festival or an opportunity to sample spiritual practices from another community.

Throughout the festival, there will be ritual, ancestor reverence and sacred community spaces.

Our Community Ancestor Altar is specifically for African American ancestors. It is not an open altar for every ancestral lineage. Please do not place photographs or offerings for colonizers, enslavers, or other ancestors whose presence would violate the purpose of this sacred space.

If you are attending from outside the Black community, understand that your ticket is an invitation to respectfully witness, listen, learn and support. It is not an invitation to claim Hoodoo, center yourself within it, or assume access to every ritual simply because you purchased admission.

Some things can be shared.
Some things can be witnessed.
Some things are ours.

Come respectfully. Listen deeply. Honor the people whose tradition you are entering.

31 Days of Hoodoo — Day 9: Preserve a Family Remedy 🌿

Dr. Jack Macon was an enslaved Tennessee healer and root doctor whose knowledge of roots, herbs, and healing became so respected that people sought his care despite laws restricting enslaved people from practicing medicine.

His story reminds us that Black folk medicine was more than “old remedies.” It was knowledge, survival, and community care passed from person to person.

Today’s practice: Ask someone in your family about a remedy they remember — a tea, salve, poultice, tonic, prayer, or herb. Write down what it was used for, how it was made, and who taught it to them.

Preserve it before the person carrying the knowledge becomes an ancestor.

31 Days of Hoodoo — Day 8: Learn a Root 🌿

Today we’re learning High John the Conqueror, Ipomoea jalapa, a member of the morning glory family. Its vine produces trumpet-shaped flowers, while its powerful root is worked in Hoodoo for strength, mastery, protection and overcoming obstacles.

And one of my favorite examples of High John’s spirit comes from Frederick Douglass.

While enslaved under the brutal Edward Covey, Douglass met an enslaved man named Sandy Jenkins, who gave him a root to carry on his right side and told him it would protect him from being whipped.

I believe that root was High John.

Douglass carried it. When Covey attacked him again, Douglass fought back—and Covey never successfully whipped him again.

Whether the history books name the root or not, I know what that story means to me: resistance, protection, power, and an unconquered spirit.

And don’t forget Sandy Jenkins, the Black man who passed that root knowledge to Douglass.

Today’s practice: Learn a root beyond what it’s “for.” Learn its plant, its history, and the people who carried its knowledge. 🌿

31 Days of Hoodoo — Day 7: Clean Your House 🧹

Before you spiritually clean a house, clean the house.

Pictured is Ella Watson, photographed by Gordon Parks in Washington, D.C. in 1942. Watson worked as a government charwoman, and Parks photographed her with the tools of her labor in an image that became an enduring portrait of Black working life in America.

I’m using Ella Watson’s image today not to identify her as a Hoodoo practitioner, but to honor generations of Black women whose labor kept homes, workplaces, churches and communities clean.

In Hoodoo, we understand that tending the spiritual condition of a home doesn’t replace tending to the physical one.

Sweep. Mop. Take out the trash. Clear the clutter. Open the windows.

Then spiritually refresh your space.

Today’s practice: Start at the back of your home and clean toward the front. As you work, think intentionally about what you’re removing from your space—and what you don’t want following you into the next season.

And if Florida Water is part of your spiritual cleaning, pull out that Flawda Wata™. 💦🧹

Clean it physically. Clean it spiritually. Keep your house tended.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. DeAnna Daniels @deannadnls1 to the 2026 Hoodoo Heritage Festival! 🖤

Dr. Daniels is a scholar of Black religion, gender and sexuality, speculative fiction and horror, popular and visual culture, and Black aesthetics.

She joins us for our scholars’ conversation:

“Conjuring the Blues: Hoodoo, Sinners, and Black Southern Folklife.”

This conversation will explore the intersections of Hoodoo, Black religion, Southern folklore, blues, horror, and the cultural world reflected in Sinners.

Hoodoo Heritage Festival isn’t just about celebrating our traditions—it is also a space to study them, question them, document them, and put Black scholarship in conversation with living Black culture.

31 Days of Hoodoo — Day 6: Study Your Roots 🖤

Hoodoo history isn’t somewhere far away. It’s right here in Tennessee.

Today we’re remembering Lillie Mae Glover, a Tennessee rootworker whose story gives us a window into the Hoodoo and folk-healing traditions practiced within Black Southern communities.

When we talk about preserving Hoodoo, we have to preserve the names and stories of the people who actually carried these traditions—not just the practices themselves. Too many Black rootworkers, healers and conjure workers lived and died without their histories receiving the attention they deserved.

Today’s practice: Study Your Roots.

Research one Black Hoodoo practitioner, rootworker, healer, elder, folklorist, or tradition-bearer from your state or region. Don’t stop at what they practiced. Learn where they lived, who taught them, who they served, and what was happening in their community during their lifetime.

For those of us in Tennessee, there’s a whole history beneath our feet waiting to be remembered.

Know their names. Learn their stories. Keep the history alive.

31 Days of Hoodoo — Day 5: Learn a Psalm 🖤

The Bible—especially the Book of Psalms—has long had a place in Black Southern spiritual life and Hoodoo. Psalms have been prayed for protection, healing, justice, deliverance, prosperity and strength.

Today we honor Bishop Charles Harrison Mason (1864–1961), founder of the Church of God in Christ. Born to formerly enslaved parents in Tennessee, Mason’s life and ministry reflected a Black Southern spiritual world where prayer, healing, testimony, laying on of hands, anointing and belief in the power of the Spirit were lived practices.

Understanding Hoodoo also means understanding the Black communities that carried it. Christianity and Hoodoo have not always existed as separate worlds in Black Southern life. Our people adapted scripture, prayer and spiritual practices to meet the realities they faced.

Today’s practice: Choose a Psalm. Read it aloud. Then study how that Psalm has traditionally been used in Hoodoo and Black folk spiritual practice.

Don’t just memorize the words—learn what our people did with them.
