Well that was fun!

Terrific to see nearly 200 makers and artists (and supporters) at the mega-meet-up last night despite the weather. It just goes to show what a committed bunch you are! (Or maybe it was the @abyssbrewing and @la_squadra_della_pizza you came for… 🤔)

Kudos to the squad at @artwavefestival and @therosamag for being brilliant partners on the night, and to @johnnydenisview and Jon @tuttonandyoung for speaking up for makers and artists.

What a way to launch the Artwave Festival, good luck to everyone that is opening and exhibiting. Do try and see as many as possible!!!

Hi, I’m @belen.ceramics a potter based in Eastbourne.
I happened upon clay almost by chance, it had never occurred to me this could be my vocation, although I had long been drawn to it unconsciously.
Working with clay is mucky but it’s a magical material and I’m still in wonder at the whole process.

After leaving college I ran a busy pottery with @johndilnot from 1985-1996 selling through galleries here and abroad and Liberty of London.
My work then was inspired by Mediterranean pottery & art.

When my son Joseph was born, I downed tools and did quite a bit of teaching. About 2007 I started making again.

The ancient and rich tradition of story telling in pottery has always inspired me to tell my own stories.
More and more, I explore my love for and relationship with the natural world. I also draw on folklore, fairy tales and the wild flowers here in Sussex.

Thank you Corina & Charlotte for inviting me to do this Makers Takeover.

1)The Power of Plants. Exhibited this summer @atelierbrighton . I was thrilled to win a prize.

2)With the Ragwort that self sows in our garden and inspired the piece.

3)The Company of Birds exhibited @jomo_hove Open House during the Brighton Festival last May.

4)WIP, I love red clay and fire in the earthenware range. I’m currently trying out new glazes and a white clay and there have been interesting results I will be using in work.

5)After the biscuit firing, I start decorating with layers of underglaze colours. I take my time doing this, I don’t like rushing work.

6)A meadow on The South Downs. I walk a lot on the Downs and am fascinated by the wildflowers in particular.

7)A corner of the little room I work in at home, the curtains were made by my mother for my kitchen when I lived in Liverpool in the 1990’s.

8)I explore using print images from my drawings on white glazed pieces. I’m a big fan of pottery transferware and would like to explore this process more.

9) Early work I made when running the pottery with John

10)The first clay object I made, age 11 at school
