Final post with @themakersdirectory , thankyou so much for having me! This post is about my current exhibition with @julianwildsculpture at 5 Howick Place in Victoria, London. Our show explores the chaos of our world, using absurdity, humour, kitsch, subverted building materials, and historical references. We are doing an in conversation event with Ceri Hand @cerihand and on 19th November at 6pm, all welcome! Organised and curated by the wonderful HS Projects @hs_projects Next are images of our new art school, @cementarts_cic based in Newhaven. It is amazing to live about a 4 minute walk away! At Cement we teach lots of courses, things like sculptural ceramics, metal sculpture, industrial landscape painting, and large scale painting. We really believe in hands on, tangible stuff, materiality, making....and of course, lots of chat 😊 We also mentor artists online and at their studios, and we are launching our six month Artist Development Programme in January, which involves tutorials, studio space at our lovely place (with a fab gang of studio artists) or online if you already have a studio, professional development advice, and the occasional group crit. My next post for the makers takeover is about the wonderful artists in Newhaven. We are so lucky to have met @isobelxsmith and @abigailnorris000 and @thebarongilvan Images of Isobel and Abi's astonishing show at BN9 💥 intriguing, dark, moving, mysterious. Coming up is The Baron Gilvan's show in December at BN9. If anyone can fill that space..... the Baron can! 💥 Also a shout out to Lizzie and Ellie @hospitable_environment who have been doing amazing things for ages in Newhaven, but have been so welcoming to us @cementarts_cic Truly hospitable! by @themakersdirectory

Thankyou @themakersdirectory ! So delighted to be doing the takeover! My first post is about my current show at Farley's @farleyshg which is the home of Lee Miller and Roland Penrose. The paintings I have chosen to show at Farley's partly developed from an artist residency with Kings College London, collaborating on a project investigating dreams and wakeful consciousness (I can never spell that!) The paintings touch on recurring images, moonscapes, seances, mirrors, darkness. I am hosting an ending PV on Thursday 22nd October, with a mercifully short artist talk at 5.30, followed by drinks. Takeover Day 3: It’s been quite a big few months for us having recently opened our own shop & gallery in Alfriston. As the space is all about craftsmanship the final part of our concept is to get people making, so we’ll be hosting a variety of creative workshops in the beautiful room upstairs. We’ve got a small series of workshops happening over the next few months with lots more to come next year, so watch this space! Last week was really exciting as we held our first shoemaking workshop where you can come & make a pair of our signature @chapter2.store leather boots. We’ve got another bootmaking workshop coming up in Nov and a few more dates in the new year. I mean, how cool it would be to wear a pair of shoes you’ve made yourself?!! 🥾🔨 We’re also welcoming other makers to share their craft in our space, so next week you’ll find: 🌸 Amy @hamsey_belle creating beautiful flower clouds (there still a couple of places if you’d like to join us), 🧺 Lisa @lisa.dear.maker will be weaving hazel handle willow baskets, 🐦‍⬛ Jacs @doubell_ceramics will be sculpting clay robins on Nov 14 (only one last place remaining) 💍 and Alice @aliceeden will be making some gorgeous jewellery on several dates in Nov. I can’t wait to see people sitting around the big table learning new skills, trying out different crafts and making all sorts of amazing things. Takeover Day 2: Working in footwear is very technical and precise so I always admire other makers work which is more free and expressive. We have an amazing selection of local makers work in our shop @chapter2.gallery over in Alfriston so I thought I’d share a few of them: The ceramic bird sculptures that are currently in our window are by ceramicist @doubell_ceramics whose birds have an amazing life like and characterful quality. You’ve only got about a week left to come & enjoy them! You’ll find a ceramic installation by @katemcminnies hanging above our staircase. It’s a piece to reflect the landscape of the Downs around Alfriston, made with different wild clays, foraged seed heads and vines. Beautiful woodcut prints by @thestonecarver whose work I love for her mark making and the skill in the carving. Hand woven willow baskets from @lisa.dear.maker who uses the most beautiful combination of colours and textures running through her work. Ceramics by @stephtooleyceramics whose process is so incredibly fascinating. A beautiful dried flower cloud by @hamsey_belle hangs upstairs in our magical workshop space. Wood turned pieces by G-Dad (who’s actually my dad). He doesn’t do social media so you’ll have to visit us in person to see his mahogany stripe bowls and vases. Hello 👋🏼 it’s Fay here from @chapter2.store I’m a footwear designer and my husband Tom @thealchemistsfootprint is a shoemaker. We combine our skills to create our own footwear brand called Chapter 2. I should probably start by saying we’re not cobblers, that’s a shoe repairer. We’re shoemakers, but if you want to be fancy you could call us Cordwainers. Shoemaking is on the red list of endangered crafts in the UK so what we do is pretty rare these days. There are hundreds different of processes in making shoes; from the last making, pattern cutting, clicking, closing & lasting. Each one a skill and a job in itself. We have a workshop in Hailsham where the shoemaking action happens, and a few months ago we opened a physical shop & gallery in Alfriston. The shop is a big leap of faith for us but we want people to see and try our shoes on in real life, not only online. We see the shop as a way of celebrating craftsmanship so alongside our shoes you’ll find an inspiring mix of art, ceramics, wood, textiles, print and more. Our workshop is quite small and quite messy most of the time but out of the chaos come THE most incredible shoes! We specialise in womens shoes. Our brand Chapter 2 is known for making beautiful & timeless leather boots but Tom’s speciality in shoemaking is actually women’s fashion heels. Between us both we’ve worked for luxury fashion houses, young designers & global footwear brands, created shoes for catwalk shows, art projects and bespoke shoes for individual clients as well as films. We do lots of different shoe related projects and often the most complicated ones tend to find their way to us because we’re able to push the boundaries of what people think of as handmade shoes, and we having worked in fashion we‘ve also got an eye for design. We can do traditional of course, but give us a wild concept and we’ll bring that to life!! 👠 by @themakersdirectory

🔑 I'VE GOT THE KEYS!!!! 🔑🎉🥳 Oh my goodness... it is all starting to feel VERY REAL!!! Today I picked up the keys to Gallery 184, and I can get stuck into turning this beautiful space into the gallery I've been dreaming of! There is a LOT to do... clearing, cleaning, decorating, organising, and probably a fair amount of panicking along the way! 🤣 But I am SO excited to get started. And can we just take a moment to appreciate those HUGE windows - I absolutely LOVE them! I can't wait to fill them with beautiful artwork, giving everyone sitting at the traffic lights in Uckfield something lovely (and ever-changing!) to look at while they wait! I honestly cannot quite believe this is actually happening. The excitement levels are through the roof... but WOW, so are the nerves! 🫣 What have I got myself into?! 🤣 There is something simultaneously terrifying and utterly wonderful about taking a huge leap into the unknown, but here we are... Gallery 184 is actually happening!!! 🎨 AND... WE'RE LOOKING FOR ARTISTS! If you're a Sussex-based artist and fancy joining our merry band of creatives, I would absolutely LOVE to hear from you!
