Poderosa Woman Wednesday

Meet Susana, As the proud daughter of resilient South American immigrants, Susana´s leadership training began from an early age by serving as the key translator, appointment-maker, and cultural interpreter for her family. Armed with her rich, first-gen experience, Susana became a skilled cultural interpreter and business strategist in the hospitality and spirits industries. After nearly two decades of helping men build global brands, Susana decided to bet on herself. In 2016, she launched an online platform for Latina mothers called The Mamish Community and in 2022, she opened her own boutique agency called COLECTVA—aimed at empowering and amplifying Women-led businesses. You can typically find her sipping a cafecíto, bike riding with her family, and plotting her next move to empower female change-makers.

This week I am that mom. This week I have been late to every Go&$amn appointment, meeting, reunion, and deadline. Cortisol has been having a field day with my body and I feel like burning the whole ass world down just because I’m over it. OVER IT! Next week I’ll be back to my composed and lovely self but this week can go straight to hell with an Easter Basket. 🐣

Everyone’s household is different. Here are a few parenting practices that you may/may not share with us:
1. We don’t carry book bags. This gives our son a sense of responsibility and ownership of his things.
2. Everyone makes their own bed. It’s your place of comfort & rest and we believe it’s important for our son to treat it as such.
3. Chores are how you contribute to our community which is our family. It’s how you can help out and become an active participant in cleaning up our space. Everyone pitches in.
4. We make extra time for crying, melt-downs, tantrums, and all the frustration it takes when you’re little. Our son is allowed to express himself and it may not always be pretty but at least he got it out.

Which of these do you practice in your home?

Dear Men—

You can be gentle with YOURSELF too. Yes. You! You deserve pampering and self-care. You deserve flowers and a nice bubble bath. You don’t have to wait for a lady to do these things for you. You too need to nurse a broken heart at times. You too need to stay home and cry a bit. It’s okay. You deserve softness. You can be gentle with yourself. 🤞🏽

—“Kids are mean,” they say.
+ “Where do you think they learned to be mean?” I ask.
--”From other kids,” they say.
+”And where did THOSE kids learn to be mean?” I ask.
[insert blank stare followed by offensive, intense look]

We can't ask them to be something we are not. Can't expect them to practice what we are not practicing. Can't ask them to heal wounds we still deny exist and are bleeding.

They are watching. Our little mirrors who will one day set out into the world and reflect all of the errors AND the effort we put in. Cortéz reminds me each and every day how much work I have in front of me. He pushes me to dig deeper, be MORE patient, find another way. I can't offer up anything that says it will get easier. I can only say that I'm right there with you.
