Waking up to this case shook me to my core.

As our communities fight for equitable schools that truly engage and challenge young minds, this is the reality we’re up against. As a proud #boymom, I carry the responsibility of raising the next generation of brown boys in this country. And today, I feel disgusted and heartbroken.

What messages are we letting into our homes through our silence? What ideas are we reinforcing every time we look the other way?

Misogyny is hurting—and taking the lives of—our girls and women. This is not a game. Why isn’t our outrage louder?

What can we do? Start by saying the words. Call out violence. Share our stories with our sons, partners, brothers, and friends.

One day, my son will be a tall, handsome young man who may be afforded privileges he did not earn. It is my job to help him understand that. To help him navigate it. To teach him that privilege is not always earned—and must never be used to harm or diminish others.

Here is the hard truth: women are afraid of men. Men we raised. Men we love. Men we have enabled, empowered, excused, exalted, and forgiven. These are our men. They are not somewhere far away. They are in our beds, our homes, our communities, our places of worship, at our tables, and in our schools.

This does not happen only to “those” people. It happens to all of us. And all of us should be enraged—and ready to act.

Today. Clearly. Directly. With love, and with wisdom.

It used to annoy me when I would receive random underwear or soap deliveries but now I’ve grown to really love the thoughtfulness that these gifts come with. Maybe it’s motherhood or maturity. I appreciate that my elders stopped to think about me, my needs….even if it was just surplus compra from Costcos 😭 I still love it and know I will ABSOLUTELY follow in this tradition.

Fighting against ingrained cultural norms and training myself to be and do different is HARD. Today I was reminded that I can be wrong and not a failure. I can ask my child for forgiveness and still feel empowered. I can admit I am a work in progress and still be great. Curious to know what you’re working on?

It’s #LispanicHeritageMonth and this month always provides me with the space to reflect on my own cultural experience as an American-Born Latina. The word that always comes to mind is NUANCE. We so often fall into tropes about our own communities (I know I’m guilty 🙋🏽‍♀️) and it’s important that we tell our stories to show how diverse our community really is. This is my multi-part storytelling contribution to our nuanced story. I invite you to tell yours.

If we are going to help raise and change the next generation of men, we need to start with how we talk about and to boys. I feel very strongly about our boys being supported and uplifted in a way that is loving and in full alignment with their power. My goal is to break misaligned cultural customs…even if that puts me at odds with my community. Even if it “offends” people. My priority will always be my kids.

HAPPY LISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH!

Getting back to basics has never been more important. This is my gentle communal reminder that we all carry within us, EVERYTHING we will ever need. Take this month to tap back in and share the many gems that our ancestors shared with us. What was your favorite enseñanza?

I swear it takes me my surprise EVERY👏🏽TIME👏🏽 someone decides to openly impose their silly ass unsolicited thoughts on me. I did not send for you ma’am. I did not summon your opinions nor was I inviting you into conversation. In fact, I was talking to someone else! That’s the wildest part. I’m gonna argue that “Nadie te preguntó” lays the foundation for boundary setting. In a world of noisy unsolicited opinions, I believe we should all revisit these teachings. Food for thought.#mamish #motherhood #parenting #NotToday taken in New York City by @themamishcommunity

The buying frenzy of the Fall is not going to deter our family from reaching our goals.

Normalize Hand-Me-Downs
Normalize Thrifting
Normalize the clearance section
Normalize opting out
Normalize the discount store and the dollar store
Normalize stockpiling

I saw a pack of pencils for $12 this year and I almost fell over! I know that every family has different needs and capacities. We’ve decided to opt out on several things and this was one of them. The feeding frenzy at the stores has me sick because I know what living in this economy does to our monthly budget and it’s just not giving what it’s supposed to give. We are focusing on throwing out less and REALLY using the things we purchase. My total this year for back to school supplies? $16. Most importantly, we had a great NYC summer (no major trips) and he woke up happy, healthy, and ready to learn. 🤓

How was your B2S experience?

I too fear the drastic decline of appropriate dress and occasion-based outfits with young adults BUT that is what we are here for…to light the way and introduce tailoring and layering and undergarments! We’ve also received quite a bit and in a world where EVERYTHING IS EXPENSIVE AND HARD, I truly believe the kids are doing their best. I know I am.

Mamís it’s happening! The kids are returning to childhood. I haven’t been on here much because I have been laser focused on family. Part of this development is my wish for our son to have the type of summer we used to have as kids. Free of screens and helicoptering a$$ parents. So we started with the courtyard. We threw a few balls out there and put up a mini basketball hoop and something MAGICAL happened. The kids went outside. Now we have a network of watchful parents who all have eyes on the courtyard and we text each other to let each other know we have eyes on the kids. They play made up games. They yell and run and jump and come up tired and sticky and sweaty and ready to rest. It’s WONDERFUL. Last week they even involved the teenagers in a game of hide and go seek! I could hear their screams and laughter from my apartment window. This fills my heart with so much joy! #CourtyardChonicles #NYCchildhood #NYCkids #Mamish taken in Bronx, NY by @themamishcommunity

I’m gonna ask that #GenZ let their hair down a little more and I need my fellow #Millenials and #GenX parents to support them. They are WAY too serious, way too fast. These kids aren’t dancing, they aren’t dating, they aren’t being IRRESPONSIBLY young. My data analyst at work is 25! WTF! They’re juicing and working out and doing potlucks and investing responsibly…it’s too much. We are now pushing kids to go straight from adolescence into hardcore adulting and WE don’t even have our own $hit figured out yet. I recently read an article about parents trying to demystify 6/7 and I blurted out “WHY???” Let them have their things. Why do we need to analyze every damn thing. It’s a stupid kid thing just like all the stupid kid things we used to do. Remember that? Who cares what 6/7 is or if they can use it on their college application. I want the kids to be kids and I want to see GenZ be young and enjoy their youth. Am I the only one?
