Meet Maryse Lagagneur

“The Last Meal is part of a cinematic approach of duty to remember. Through this film, / wanted to bring about an engaged reflection on the scars left by the dictatorship of Jean-Claude Duvalier on an entire generation of Haitians between 1971 and 1986, as well as on their descendants - heirs of intergenerational trauma. / used cinema to unveil the courage, resistance, honor and strength of the survivors of the Fort-Dimanche prison, notorious for torture. These survivors of horror were long held in taboo, silence and oblivion, but this film finally gives them a voice.” - Maryse Lagagneur, Director, The Last Meal

🎞️THE LAST MEAL

Reynold is dying of stomach cancer. He uses the occasion of his last meals to share them with his daughter Vanessa, whom he hasn’t seen in 20 years. Hesitant at first, Vanessa agrees to see her father again. As the meal progresses, a ritual begins to take hold, with traditional dishes acting as reminders of the past.

Vanessa discovers who her father really is: a loving man whose heart was hardened by the dictatorship. Directed by Maryse Lagagneur, this film goes straight from the stomach, to the heart.

COMING SOON TO A METRO CINEMA NEAR YOU!

Place & Space: Architecture on Screen

Place & Space is an exploration of architecture in film. Refocusing the built environment from a passive background to a main character, this series celebrates architecture as a force for storytelling, revealing how social values are expressed in structure and design to shape how we see the past, experience the present, and imagine the future. From dizzying futurism to grounded modernism, Place & Space invites you to expand your architectural imagination and decode the quiet beauty, power, and psychology of the places and spaces that move us.

Huge thanks to the @themetrocinema for creating opportunities for guest programmers, like me, to curate and share these films with a wider audience than just the people using my Netflix account.

This November, grab some popcorn and join me, and a dark room full of architecture dorks, and be moved by place and space on the big screen.

Last night, I did the one thing I never thought possible. I saw Cannibal Holocaust on the big screen. To some people, they're surprised I'm a fan of this movie. And no I do not recommend this movie to people actively. If you claim to be this huge gore person, no. Shut your fucking mouth. This movie has incredibly upsetting scenes of animal cruelty and it has scenes of sexual violence that make this a tough watch. That said, I am an 80's horror fan. And I consider this a rite of passage of sorts. Because despite the contents in it, this is a really good film and the excessive parts are the point of it. For one, it's story is well told and despite knowing the main characters outcome? They are well developed. And the new 4K transfer from @grindhousereleasing looks incredible! The movie truly has never looked better. On top of that, the gore effects I think still look good. And the score too, i'd be down to add this to my vinyl collection. But I have the Grindhouse Blu-Ray with it on CD. I'm making this clear? I will recommend it to people only on the condition if you're a seasoned horror fan and you've never seen it. Matter of fact, most of my audience never saw it before! (I jokingly told them, welcome to hell! Ha ha!) But if you're a horror veteran and seen most of the 80's horror must sees or trying to see the video nasties? I recommend it. But if you're not ready and you babble to me about how you can handle anything? I'm not stopping you but don't complain to me after you thought it goes too far.

Huge thanks though once again to @themetrocinema for showing this as part of @nwfearfest. Next year I am buying a pass to all of the films. An absolute fun time! Also thanks to @videostorekev for selling me the VHS of the movie. Can not wait to get the 6 disc boxset in November.
