Check out our Army brother and his journey to Jiu Jitsu brown belt ...

" In 2003, after serving my enlistment in the Army Natl Guard, I accepted a commission as an active duty officer (2nd Lieutenant) and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, HI.

I deployed with 17 CSB to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005, serving in Mosul, Iraq as a Transportation Platoon Leader.

I resigned from my commission in 2007, as an Army Captain.

I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in early 2009 in Chicago, and since then, I’ve had so many opportunities to train at different gyms and meet some great people.

In my life, when times were tough, I had BJJ to help keep me grounded. My training partners are like family to me. My BJJ training & support literally saved my life by challenging me and bringing that camaraderie I missed from being in the military.

I now host a podcast called The Morning Formation Podcast, and I’m also a proud board member for Act Now Education, a military non-profit."

🇺🇸🇧🇷🥋🤙🏽

Thanks for sharing your love for Jiu Jitsu with the military community!

Is that really me⁉️ Here’s Video I sent on a CD to my parents from my Iraq deployment in February of 2005📸 few days after my 25th birthday.

It’s me, but I really don’t recognize this skinny Army Platoon Leader (2nd Lieutenant), who at the time, was on a combat deployment, less than a year after commissioning.

My enlisted time helped with my lack of experience, but when you go to war, it’s still walking into a dark room for EVERYONE.

I’ve been telling the TMF podcast apprentice/co-host, Avi, to journal his journey toward becoming a future military leader and this video is why…

I wish I had done so many more of these videos bc who I was and who I am today are two different individuals. It’s encouraging that this video helps remind me of where/who I was in 2005 bc I forgot all about this young LT.

“I wonder how my parents felt watching this for the first time?”

Also, I think about how trustful, inexperienced, eager, stressed, green, guarded, and brave I was to jump into the deep end like many of my other military brothers and sisters🇺🇸

For my fellow Vets, do you wish you had done a better job of journaling your own life? If you are a young, aspiring adult, consider journaling on paper, digital, or video…Someday, you’ll “thank me.”🙏🏽🤙🏽💯

🎙I’m not trying to live in the past…But it was kind of cool to have found this, after years of hiding it inside a plastic tote. Why did I hide this, I don’t know?

Maybe it was to move on? Maybe to fit in with the 93% who had never served? Maybe it was bc I felt nobody cared? I think it was a little bit of all three, actually.😔

I regret throwing away much of my military items, but I am thankful that some things were hidden & protected from myself. Like this old newspaper clipping from my hometown. Had I have found it, immediately after my service, I would’ve prob got rid of it.🙏🏽 Maybe one day, I’ll talk about it more on the podcast🎙
