“Style, spirit, soul. Whatever the change he caused, it was not language that did it,” writes Kyle Beachy of Dylan Rieder. “No, the revolution of Dylan was not linguistic. It was formal, visual, and spiritual.”

A decade to the day since Dylan Rieder passed away, we’re revisiting Beachy’s beautiful essay from his book ‘The Most Fun Thing’ which we had the honour of publishing last year.

“This essay is a sort of late one and it is, in a way, a culmination of what the rest of the book is trying to do,” writes Beachy, in a foreword for Skate Bylines. “Which is get directly at the question of “style”, what “style” is and how much, really, we as skateboard fans can know about these skaters we spend so many hours watching on our screens.”

Find ‘Dylan Rieder: Style Was His Soul’ at Skate Bylines and as read by Beachy in our Listen section and wherever you get your podcasts (link in bio).

Today marks five years since the publication of my friend Kyle Beachy’s book, ‘The Most Fun Thing’.

Kyle’s book features an essay on @andrewreynolds and its one of the most formative pieces of writing to me as a journalist. I found Kyle’s essay when I was 17, still studying at college, and its one of the earliest touch points I can remember that made me want to write about skateboarding myself when it ran on @jenkemmag in 2012.

I’ve gotten to know Kyle over the past five years, messaging and chatting here and there. We properly connected after I asked if I could interview him for @skatebylines about his Reynolds piece. Fittingly, it became a formative story for Bylines too. I also had the honour of publishing Kyle’s essay on Dylan Rieder from his book and was graced by the beautiful photography of @aacostaa to accompany it.

In spring of this year, I was humbled to be picked to present at @slowimpactaz on the second day of the ‘Paper Sessions’ which Kyle was hosting. It was a profound thing to go from reading someone’s work to being stood beside them in another country a over a decade later. (And, most unpredictably, eating hungover breakfast burritos whilst talking to Antwuan Dixon on @ryan_lay’s porch a couple of days later. But that’s another half-written story.)

Which is all to say, simply, reach out to people you like and admire. If they’re earnest and nice, it’ll take you in cool directions. Thanks, Kyle.

I have recently re-read Kyle Beachy’s The Most Fun Thing as the launch of our Skate Book Club (of which we stole the same name hehe)

The book is a reflection on how skateboarding makes us human, and the ways in which this is mediated through the wonderfully weird crooks-and-nannies of the culture. A collection of essays written between 2010 and 2020, the work is a documentation on a rapidly changing skateboarding making this one of the most important works of writing on the culture. After initially reading when it first came out, I found the temporal aspect even more fascinating, perhaps illuminating a relatively stagnating skateboarding in comparison to the decade before?!

It is a reflective book on a life as a skater, and Kyle (@themostfunthing) often frames essays on how skateboarding influences his writing/reading, which is why I chose the book to start our own club. Kyle, being the boss he is, kindly offered a reading and discussion for us before we met in-person to talk through the book further. This session was BEYOND EXPECTATION: Kyle has a unique ability to bring his work even more alive whilst creating a space of care where we really dug into his book and also our own writing adventures.

This energy carried into our first in-person meeting at @thegrovediy. We used the chapter on Mark Succiu’s Verso video part as a prompt to open conversations on the state of skateboarding today, capturing skateboarding through writing, and how we all fell in love with it. The verdant quality of our conversations is testament to Kyle’s writing, and also the desire for skaters to get together and really unpack it all. Safe to say we are all hyped for next month’s meeting, with lady fate deciding To Kill A Mockingbird for our next read… hmu to join our group chat!!! (Stacking clips also allowed !!)

S/o @ital_walkz for the food

Skate-Book Club: The Most Fun Things starts Monday June 22nd at @thegrovediy & @the_grove_community_garden. The premise is simple: have a skate together and then a nice chit-chat about a book we have all just read (note that books will not be limited to being about skateboarding !!)

But, we will start things off with a reading and discussion on Kyle Beachy’s The Most Fun Thing: Dispatches from a Skateboard Life (@themostfunthing). The aim of this session is to think about reading, writing and skateboarding together, to then collectively set the first book to read before the following months meeting. You don’t have to read this book before the session as we will read some passages together in the garden, and I’ll bring some more copies to share on the day!!!

And… can you believe that Kyle has offered to host an online Q&A/discussion on Monday June 15th (19:00BST)?! What a special opportunity to get some wisdoms from the man himself and great way to shape our own discussions in the garden the following week !

Join the WhatsApp group for all the finer information, including call link for Kyle’s online session. Bringing people together in a physical space to chat and skate is really important motivation behind this book club, but if you are farer afield than London, still please join the group, read the books, send some clips and weigh in on the chat ! Likewise, you are all welcome to join Kyle’s online session too!

DM any questions you may have :)

Skateboarding and reading… the most fun things !!!!!
