I never would’ve believed you if you would’ve described my current life to the 22 year old version of me in that hospital bed.

I’m forever grateful for my support from my family, my friends & Katarina, but I’m also proud of the way I’ve handled my life thus far.

Thank you to everyone that came out and made last night such a special time. For a while, now I’ve been playing with the powers of a camera and last night a new capability presented itself. Because of my cameras (and a shit load of hard work from some incredible people*) a community was able to come together and have a night full of big smiles, positive vibes, and creative expression.

How does Sam shoot with his camera as a quadriplegic? 👨‍🦼📸

Sometimes he needs help like he does with this slider. But whenever he’s shooting at the beach, he’s able to place hooks on necessary things, put a tray on his lap, and get it done with some persistence and tenacity!

This specific moment was at the Micanopy historical district during our bus trip. Sam and I had to take a moment to make some art.

Traveling breaks down barriers 🤲

When you have a spinal cord injury, there are so many unique challenges you have to face daily. All these barriers are incredibly frustrating and limiting, and the world can feel isolating and totally alien. But when you travel, something remarkable happens: those barriers start to break down.

Suddenly, you’re in a new place, surrounded by people and experiences that are unfamiliar. But instead of being hindered by your spinal cord injury, you find that people are eager to help and support you, including the people in your life that help make travel possible (if you’re a higher level injury like me and need more assistance). You find kindness and compassion in unexpected places, and you discover that the things that make us different can also bring us together.

Traveling also exposes you to new cultures and perspectives, broadening your understanding of the world and helping you connect with people from all walks of life. It challenges you to step outside your comfort zone, try new things, and see the world in a new light. Disability or not, this is so enriching!

Honestly, most importantly, traveling can help you see yourself in a different way. When you’re away from home and all the familiar routines and expectations, you have the freedom to reinvent yourself, to see yourself as capable of new and exciting things. You may find that you’re more capable than you ever imagined, and that your spinal cord injury is just one part of who you are.

So if you have a spinal cord injury, don’t let it hold you back from traveling. Embrace the opportunities that travel presents, and let them help you break down the barriers that can so easily limit our lives. You might be surprised at the connections you make, the things you discover about yourself, and the ways in which travel can transform your life.

Katarina and I are itching for more. Thanks for following as we find new ways to incorporate travel in our lives.

@treeeviis back in 2018 filming for @themuels #unorthodox skate film. This project was my first introduction to cameras & the wonderful world of photography & videography. I have so much gratitude for this chapter in my life and the people that I was able to be around and share so many good times with.
