The forest has secrets. Come find them. 🌲✨

The 19th annual Cordova Fungus Festival returns September 18–20, bringing three days of mushrooms, forest forays, wild foods, art, folklore, fermentation, friendship bracelets and plenty of woodland whimsy to Cordova.

Explore the northernmost coastal temperate rainforest, learn from mushroom experts, uncover strange and wonderful fungus lore, make something beautiful, and celebrate the wild kingdom beneath our feet. Every registrant even gets a free beaded fungus friendship bracelet. 💚🍄

And when the sun goes down, the Fungus Soirée begins with a wild-food cook-off, fungus-themed costumes, a silent auction and an evening of delicious, delightfully weird fun.

Whether you’re a seasoned forager or simply curious about the mysterious kingdom of fungi, there’s something waiting for you in the woods of Cordova.

Pro tip: match your gansey to the color of the berries of the season so that any berry stains just blend right in! 🫐

I am absolutely delighted to find that Frangipani's "Cordova" colorway is a perfect match for the oval-leaf blueberry! No wonder I like this color so much. Here in the sound I regularly see three species of blueberries but my personal hot take is that the oval-leaf is the best of the three. The waxy bloom gives it a lighter appearance on the bush, which helps distinguish it from the similar Alaska blueberry, which is shinier.

Knit pattern is the Salmon Run Gansey, available on Ravelry, link in bio 🐟

Yarn is Frangipani 5-ply Guernsey in color Cordova, made special for @thenetloft 💙

August tastes like smokey campfire black cod, foraged beach greens, briny oysters topped with pickled kelp, seaweed butter, glowing salmon roe, crispy salmon skin, smoked salmon, and salmon paella. Light still lingers over the water, sea otters swim by the fire on the beach each night.

This stretch of Alaska coastline is so delicious, loved sharing all its wild flavors with @thetiderun’s Alaska adventure last week.

A fitting message as the weather turned stormy, but also because it’s just a “heck yes we can!” kind of message that sums up how motivated I feel after this experience.

Day 3&4 here captures more of our learning… be sure to check out my post about Day 1 and Day 2, especially if you’ve never seen a kelp or oyster farm!

Sarah E. from @copperriverfishmarket and @eatsmallboatseafood teamed up with Sarah W. and Sam at #projectamericana to bring together a group of people who represent different parts of the solution within sustainable food/seafood.

You’ll see here our tour of the docks where we learned about small boat fishing and a little bit about the boats themselves too.

After working with Sarah E. for many years, it was beyond cool to finally step out on the docks and see their boat!

We talk a lot about appreciating our farmers and I invite you to start thinking about our small boat fishing families and mariculture farms as part of that group as well. The people we met with are doing really important work to preserve coastal communities and support ocean health along with human health!

There’s so much more to learn and so many more conversations to be had. And I can’t wait to be a part of it with you all.

🌊 Follow along with @eatsmallboatseafood so you don’t miss your opportunity to get in on something “small” that is going to make a really big difference. And I know Project Americana has more in the works as well. Stay tuned!

What is the Avian Aurora? 🕊️✨🌌

Coined at our festival by one of our favorite local guides, Isen Kelley Weaverling…

“Dark on top and light on the bottom, as shorebirds travel in dense flocks wheeling and turning, they flash light and dark ribbons reminiscent of the Northern Lights — another wonder to behold.”

The Copper River Delta is one of the magical places on this planet where you can experience migration events like this in all their splendor. Will you join us at this year’s Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival in Cordova, May 7-10?
