One thing I wish someone had told me before attending my first horse auction is how price paid does not determine success.

You can see approximately two hundred horses in a single day, and while their pedigrees and physical appearances may differ considerably, distinguishing quality from value is where the real challenge lies.

My advice would be to do your homework well in advance, study the catalogue, establish a realistic budget, and allow yourself plenty of time to inspect the horses.

Something people often underestimate is how much emotion can influence their decisions, particularly when the bidding starts and competition takes over. It's easy to fall in love with a horse, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the right horse at the right price.

Equally important is understanding that even the most expensive, beautifully bred, and physically impressive horses come with no guarantees.

Ultimately, patience, discipline, and a willingness to walk away are just as important as having a good eye. And for anyone attending their first sale, I'd strongly recommend having an experienced professional alongside them.

Englishman has entered the chat 👀

After a dominate win in the G1 H. Allen Jerkens, Englishman secured a top 10 spot in this weeks NTRA Rankings 🏆

Sovereignty remains top of the standings, but could that change with the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup looming?

The Jockey Club supports the NTRA in its efforts to pass the WAGER Act, which would restore the tax deduction for wagering losses back to 100%. Without the successful passage of this bill, only 90% of losses from wagering would be eligible for federal tax deductions.
