Today in Thoroughbred Racing History, September 27, 1947: Armed, then the world’s leading money-winning Thoroughbred, met 1946 Kentucky Derby winner Assault in the first $100,000 winner-take-all match race, held at Belmont Park. Today in Thoroughbred Racing History, September 22, 2014: Thoroughbred owner/breeder Aaron Jones died at his Eugene, Ore., home. A pair of horses he bred in partnership with his wife, Marie, won Breeders' Cup races on the same day in 2004 at Lone Star Park when Ashado took the Distaff (Gr.I) and Speightstown won the Sprint (Gr I). Marie died in August 2026 at home in Eugene as well. by @thentra

Legislative Wins: Bonus Depreciation
One of the significant achievements during Tom’s tenure has been the introduction of permanent 100% bonus depreciation for racehorses.

This change has led to a surge in horse sales, benefiting the industry as a whole.

Tom details the hard work that went into securing this provision:
“We were able to get language into the bill that included those people. Since then you’ve seen the sales skyrocket.”

Today in Thoroughbred Racing History, August 16, 2025: Jockeys David Moran and Pietro Moran became the first father-son duo to ride againset each other in the King's Plate, the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown. Son Pietro went on to win the race aboard Mansetti, becoming the third-youngest jockey at 20 years and 97 days old to win the King's Plate in the "modern era" of the race, behind David Stevenson (19 years, 319 days) and Jeffrey Fell (20 years and six days). by @thentra
