On Saturday, October 17, the City of Santa Monica will unveil the Draft Illustrative Master Plan for our Great Park at the airport site. This long-awaited, more detailed Phase 4 plan builds on the Phase 3B Draft Framework and the community engagement that followed, showing how the future park will take shape.

The Draft Illustrative Master Plan will show how the future park will be organized and how people will move through it. Perspective drawings will bring key views to life so community members can picture themselves standing in the park. You’ll be able to explore the plan as a colorful, giant floor map, walk through the community’s vision for an all-park future, and share what you’d like to see included or protected as the plan moves forward.

Your voice and presence matter. Bring your family, invite your neighbors, and help demonstrate strong community support for making the Great Park a reality. A brief follow-up survey will offer another way to share your thoughts after the event. For more information in English and Spanish: https://greatparkcoalition.org/illustrative/

I finished repotting some plants just as it started to rain today. I grew these all from seed started at a @theodorepayne workshop in June called “Propagating California Native Plants from Seed with Genevieve Arnold”. (the grass, Muhlenbergia rigens = deergrass, is probably already dead, but thought I’d give it a chance... it did so well, until this last heat wave 😕). orange pot = Datura wrightii (jimson weed), yellow = Asclepias fascicularis (narrowleaf milkweed), black = Muhlenbergia rigens (deergrass), small terracotta = Parkinsonia florida (Blue Palo Verde), largest = Abutilon palmeri (Palmer's Mallow)

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere 😎 #californianativeplants

A heatwave stresses plant out as much us, happy hour can help us both relax. A spritz on the leaves cools plants down in the evening, before doing it all again tomorrow.

DO NOT water the soil of California native plants during a heatwave. It’s difficult to uptake any water, and certain native plants can’t handle summer water at all ☠️

DO water new plantings though, but only in the early morning hours. Tbh I might put a shade cloth over them too.

Check out @californianativeplantsociety & @theodorepayne to learn more 💚

California native plants evolved to handle dry summers, which is why they’re amazing resilient and drought tolerant, but 100° in October is gonna have them pressed.

California’s marshlands and wetlands are more than beautiful landscapes—they are living infrastructure. They provide habitat for wildlife, support biodiversity, filter and store water, reduce flooding, sequester carbon, and create more resilient ecosystems in the face of drought, wildfire, sea-level rise, and a changing climate——>The future of California’s landscapes depends on designing for resilience, restoration, and coexistence with nature. 🌾🪶🌊 #LandscapeArchitecture #EcologicalDesign #WetlandRestoration #CaliforniaWetlands #waterconservation

My first ink-making zine—a recipe and steps for making oak gall ink. Loved turning people on to what oak galls are and showing them the process for making oak gall ink at Malibu Creek State Park’s 50th birthday celebration this past weekend. It was a great night with a killer sunset. #contemporaryart #botanicalink #malibucreekstatepark #naturalpigments #angelesstateparks

Stop by our booth for some interactive birding activities designed to show visitors that you don’t have to be an expert to start paying attention to the birds around you. We’ll be sharing the story behind The Bird Homies and why creating space for the BIPoC community to get outdoors, connect with nature, and experience the joy of birding matters.

But that's not all, there’s plenty more happening throughout the evening:

🍴 Food trucks
🍷 Wine & beer garden
🔥 Live storytelling
🌌 Astronomy
🎨 Crafts & activities
🌿 Community conservation organizations
🐦 Outdoor education and exploration

So don't miss out on this free event. Come celebrate 50 years of this incredible place, hear the stories that connect us to it, and spend an evening under the stars with your community. We’ll see you out there, Bird Homies.
