Welcome to Oaktober! ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ‚

Californiaโ€™s oaks are iconic trees for a reason. Theyโ€™re keystone species and a hugely important part of our local ecosystems, providing habitat, food, and shelter for a wide range of wildlife, and have been tended and utilized sustainably by indigenous groups for millennia.

This October, weโ€™re celebrating these incredible trees with two classes that offer different ways to get to know our oaks:

๐ŸŒฟโœ๏ธ Nature Journaling: Looking at Oak Leaves
Saturday | October 17 | 10 AMโ€“12 PM

๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’ง Understanding Oaks: A Tree Walk and Talk with Alison Lancaster
Saturday | October 24 | 1โ€“3 PM

Whether you want to learn how to care for an oak or simply spend some time getting to know them better, come celebrate Oaktober with us! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‚

Guess that seed! Leave your guesses below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐ŸŒฐ๐Ÿ‘‡๐ŸŒฐ๐Ÿ‘‡๐ŸŒฐ

Hints:
If youโ€™ve strolled the wooded canyon, and by chance looked โ€˜round to see
A little paper lanternโ€ฆwell, you can guess that it was me

And my loculicidal capsule that holds me safe insideโ€ฆ
Its carpels, valves and septums make the perfect place to hide

Stacked up so snug and neatly, how cozily Iโ€™m sealedโ€ฆ
โ€˜Till the capsule sutures open, and Iโ€™m charmingly revealed

What seed am i??? ๐Ÿ”

๐ŸŒฑ Look for the answer Friday at 10 am, PST!

Ever wondered what those purple plant tags at TPF mean?

They identify plants grown as a part of our Local Source Initiative (LSI). Through the LSI program, and by permit, TPF collects and documents seed from specific wild populations, then grows plants, made available in our nursery, for gardeners to bring into their landscapes.

By working with locally sourced plants that have evolved to our regions, we can help conserve regional genetic diversity and the unique plant communities of Southern California.

Want to learn more about the work behind the purple tags?

Join us for Local Source Initiative: Supporting Regional Biodiversity with Locally Sourced Plants with Ella Andersson,
a special talk on October 14 at 6 PM.
