Film exploring civil rights through the lives of the Negro League baseball players. Narrated by Cicely Tyson, features never-before-seen interviews.

So upon the directive from the great people @theotherboysofsummer I decided to visit the home of black baseball pioneer and founder of the Newark Eagles Effa Manley.

On this quiet block right off MLK Blvd adjacent to a Masonic temple parking lot, Manley and her husband Abe founded and owned the Eagles, running the front office and daily operation of the team out of this building on Crawford Street from 1941-1952. This was also where the Manleys lived and worked when the Eagles brought the Negro League World Series title back to Newark in 1946.

In 2006, Effa Manley became the first and only woman to be elected to the @baseballhall.

We had a wonderful time celebrating the rich legacy of Black baseball last Saturday with a screening of The Other Boys of Summer and a panel discussion with the filmmaker Lauren Meyer of Tumbleweed Productions, and Bob Kendrick, President of the National Negro Leagues Museum. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the inspiring presentations, including guest curator Brian Michael from our special exhibition A League Apart, and Pierre LaRocco, Quartermaster of the Athletic Base Ball Club of Philadelphia. We loved sharing this special event with our community! Want to join us for another summer event? Learn more about our upcoming programs through the link in our bio.

The legendary, Spottswood Poles, was known as the “Black Ty Cobb” for both his superb hitting and blazing speed! In 1917, as a member of the NY Lincoln Giants, Poles had his baseball career interrupted by WWI. He enlisted, at age 30, in the 369th Infantry, which was attached to the French army. He earned 5 battle stars and a Purple Heart while in France! #VeteransDay2025
