In Cameroon's toughest prison - where inmates languish in overcrowded, hellish conditions - something unexpected and inspiring can be heard: the sound of music-making in a first-of-its-kind recording studio.

This project by @jail_time_records is one of many life-changing examples of how the power of the arts is being harnessed by CAN members to help people on both sides of prison walls re-imagine incarceration. From artist Eva Chiladaki's (@echiladaki) doll-making workshops in Greek women's jails - to Life on Art's (@life_on_art_petaluma) poetry and painting programmes in Californian correctional facilities - to The People’s Creative Institute's (@thepeoples.creative ) initiative transforming a New York City prison bus into a vehicle for civic action, agency and creativity among diverse residents, we explore the ways that art humanises, empowers and transforms lives shaped by confinement, restriction and punishment.

What if healing begins when people are invited to participate?

This week in Scotland, we witnessed artists, healthcare workers, cultural organizations, and community leaders showing how creativity restores agency, connection, joy, and dignity.

At The People’s Creative Institute and Community Arts Network, we believe artists help communities rehearse better futures. Healing Arts Scotland affirmed that this work is already happening everywhere: in hospitals, galleries, streets, care homes, theatres, and public spaces. The event explored how integrating the arts has seen a significant decrease of behavioural crisis at different hospitals.

The future of health is creative. The future of public life is participatory. The future that is healthy and beautiful for us all requires us to imagine different possibilities together.

//All content captured and created by Yazmany Arboleda who participated at the event as a speaker - artist, architect, and civic designer whose work treats art as a collective action, something people do together to shape belonging, dignity, and public life. //

From neighborhood pop-ups to citywide celebrations, every event was another opportunity to connect with New Yorkers and bring participatory budgeting into communities across the five boroughs.

Ballots are still being counted, so stay tuned to find out which ideas won in your borough!
