Over the past three years @thepeoplesbus has been transforming in collaboration with NYC’s largest creative reuse center: @materialsforthearts

A program of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs @nyculture with support from the Department of Education @nycschools and Friends of Materials for the Arts, Materials for the Arts is dedicated to keeping valuable materials from entering the landfill and putting these materials into the hands of arts professionals, educators and students. On average MFTA collects 1.5 million pounds of reusable materials from businesses and individuals across the five boroughs. These items are made available, free of charge, to nonprofits organizations, city agencies, schools, and artists across the city.

@ThePeoplesBus beaded ceiling and tentacular exterior are made up of millions of pieces of treasures made available to the @NYCCEC and many other groups who have been involved in the evolution of this participatory art piece.

You can vote on how NYC should spend 5 million dollars of public money. Come vote and meet Tippy in Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, and Brooklyn:

Thank you to all of the New Yorkers who have joined us on tour!🎉 @thepeoplesbus visited the five boroughs to spread the word about #ThePeoplesMoney. Tippy: “The Tender People’s Money Monster” will be making a few more appearances this summer so watch this space 👀 on.nyc.gov/pbvoteevents 🚌

Tippy is really #ThePeoplesBus in drag— a dragon? a drag king or queen? You decide.

Via @nyccec In the summer of 2021, @yazmany (Colombian-American, b. 1981), through @nyculture’s Public Artist in Residence program #PAIRnyc, transformed a former detention vehicle from Rikers Island into a beautiful community center on wheels. The evolution of the vehicle was made possible through the artist’s collaboration with Mujeres en Movimiento, Territorial Empathy, The People’s Fellows, and NYC residents from across the five boroughs.

The People’s Bus and The Tender People’s Money Monster are large-scale art projects that seek to use beauty and joy to evince greater participation and trust in local government by changing the way government meets and serves its citizens. by @thepeoples.creative

Celebrating Danielle Brooks, Whitney White, and Tom Viola at Illuminate, Arts Ignite’s 20th anniversary gala. ✨

Founded in 2006 by Mary-Mitchell Campbell and a group of Juilliard students as Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP), Arts Ignite connects young people with opportunities to explore music, dance, theater, visual art, and more. For twenty years, artists and educators have helped young people, especially those in underserved communities, discover their voices, build connections, and imagine new possibilities.

The People’s Creative Institute was commissioned to create this year’s awards, handcrafted by immigrant mothers using reclaimed materials from Materials for the Arts. Each carries the imagination and care of the women who made it.

Congratulations to the honorees and to the Arts Ignite community for twenty years of nurturing creativity, agency, and belonging. by @thepeoples.creative

What does solidarity feel like? What object holds that memory for you?

The Hannah Arendt Center invites you to help create What We Carry: An Altar for Solidarity, a participatory artwork led by Yazmany Arboleda at Bard’s forum, Solidarity: What Are We Fighting For?

To participate, please sign up and bring an object that helps you tell the story of a moment when someone stood beside you, when you stood beside someone else, when you discovered you had more in common than you thought.

It might be a photograph, a tool, a piece of cloth, or something someone gave you. What matters is the story it carries. You’ll meet one other person, a stranger, and take turns speaking and listening with an open heart.

Join us as we think together about the world we are willing to build—and the solidarity required to sustain it.

Who gets to remember? Whose stories become part of our shared memory?

Tomorrow at MoMA, The People’s Creative Institute’s founder and Chief Artistic Officer, Yazmany Arboleda, joins Nisha Sajnani and David Maddox for a conversation about art, memory, and care, convened by Domestic Data Streamers around their project Synthetic Memories.

Through conversations and generative imagery, the project reconstructs lost or undocumented memories with people living with dementia, refugees, and communities whose stories are missing from established archives.

Together, we’ll explore how collective artmaking can help people carry their histories, make room for overlooked experiences, and build connection across differences.

Wednesday, September 30
Program begins at 3:30 PM
MoMA, New York City

Join us around the table.

During Musical Migrations, families explored the cultural roots, evolution, and global influence of Latin music through an interactive, hands-on workshop experience.

Participants traveled across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States by connecting artists, instruments, and musical traditions to their places of origin on a collaborative world map.

Through illustrated postcards, creative art-making, and an interactive listening station, young learners discovered the stories behind iconic sounds — from salsa and samba to mariachi, bomba, tango, and beyond. by @thepeoples.creative

Sometimes the most powerful changes begin with a brushstroke. Colour in Faith reminds us that public art isn’t just about transforming spaces—it’s about transforming relationships. 💛

Through a series of workshops and collaborative art projects exploring spirituality, identity, and belonging, participants were invited to share their stories through color and collective creativity—opening space for dialogue across religious and cultural differences.

As part of the project, members of the Nairobi community painted churches yellow as a symbol of unity, pluralism, and peace, transforming familiar places into vibrant reminders of the shared values that connect Muslims and Christians throughout Kenya. by @thepeoples.creative
