At the bottom of my home’s driveway in Aurora, NY, we have the most beautiful view of the lake and our neighbors’ small shed. Over the years and seasons I’ve photographed it many times. Aurora, NY on Cayuga Lake is one of the most picturesque spots I have ever been. It also happens to be my hometown. I’ve been here a month now on less than joyful circumstances. It’s the longest period of time I’ve spent here since I was here in the early 90s to shoot a movie. The nature and beauty around me give me peace these days. I always take my camera or phone on walks, especially at sunset which is my favorite time to walk the village. If you scroll my feed you’ll find years of Aurora photography across multiple seasons. 🌿 KOROWAI: HOMES ABOVE THE FOREST, STORIES BEYOND THE STEREOTYPES

Deep in the forests of Papua, the Korowai people have developed one of the most remarkable traditional forms of architecture: houses built high above the ground, often in the canopy of trees.

For the Korowai, these tree houses are not simply unusual homes. They reflect traditional knowledge, adaptation to the forest environment, safety, and skills passed down through generations.

They know how to select suitable trees, gather natural materials, and construct a house using knowledge developed through generations of living closely with the forest.

Yet there is another story that has followed the Korowai around the world:

“The Korowai are a cannibal tribe.”

But is that really an accurate way to describe an entire people?

📖 There is no historical basis for labeling the Korowai as a people who are inherently or universally cannibalistic. Some older anthropological accounts and reports have discussed allegations or accounts of ritual cannibalism in particular historical and cultural contexts. However, these accounts should not be turned into a blanket identity for the entire Korowai community—especially for Korowai people living today.

The Korowai deserve to be known for much more than sensational stories.

They are people with their own culture, traditions, knowledge, language, relationship with the forest, and remarkable ways of adapting to their environment.

🌳 Their tree houses are not just “houses in the trees.”

They are living expressions of traditional ecological knowledge and indigenous architecture.

And the Korowai are not simply a story about cannibalism.

They are a people whose culture deserves to be seen, understood, and represented without stereotypes.

Some journeys stay with you because of the places.

Others stay because of the people.

In Sweden, I met an incredible Afghan couple who spoke only Swedish. We didn’t share a language, but with a little help from AI and a lot of kindness, they created a special meal just for me and even played Bollywood songs to make me feel at home.

I also had the privilege of visiting Siemens Energy’s stunning castle transformed into a workplace, where history and innovation exist side by side.

This trip reminded me that the greatest luxury isn’t what you wear or where you go.

It’s how someone makes you feel.
