THE PASSING OF KEVIN SPENCER

With great sadness, I just learned of the passing of Kevin Spencer, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Kevin, was an original member of the hit group, “Dynasty” on our SOLAR RECORDS Label. Dynasty was a group created by my late husband, Dick Griffey and Leon F Sylvers III. Tall, handsome and one of the lead singers in the group, Kevin’s dynamic performances were a part of what made the group shine.

Kevin, was also a multi-talented musician and songwriter, who played keyboards, bass, and a lead singer who often lent his many talents, by singing background, on the albums of other legendary groups on our SOLAR RECORDS Label. Solar Records was a Boutique Label and Dick Griffey personally hand-picked each and every Artist and genuinely regarded them as family. In that spirit, as Co-Founder of our Label, I, along with my family, and our entire staff at SOLAR RECORDS, send our deepest sympathy, respect, love and prayers to the Spencer family.

i had so much fun on svara radio yesterday.

i wanted to approach this one like the radio shows i grew up loving - telling tales and spinning yarns of why these records are so special to me.

most of the time - the tales are to do with friends. new friends, old friends. all friends binded together through the joy of music. this is dedicated to them.

💿 azymuth - jazz carnival (1979)

first of all - this is a special one about my friend @lara__ra__ and her connection to a song my dad used to play back in the eighties.

🟨🟧🟥

💿 crusaders - spiral (1976)

here’s one my old man found in a box in a charity shop here in stockton heath. he didn’t quite understand my instant joy upon hearing that moodymann sample. what a thrill this was hearing for the first time.

🟨🟧🟥

💿 change - it’s a girls affair (feat. jocelyn brown) (mike maurro mix) (1980)

towards the end of last year @harryg.crkl and i embarked on the greatest knowledge transfer of all time and he taught me how to mix on wax. he’s done a lot for me and i appreciate it very much. every time we hang out one on one we’re always geeking out on obscure disco and the last time was no different. mike maurro. get to know!!

🟨🟧🟥

💿 beggar & co - somebody help me out (1981)

this is full of childhood nostalgia for me. this isn’t the first time i’ve mentioned the influence of Amstell-era Never Mind the Buzzcocks on my music taste. brings me so much joy to have this on wax.

speaking of wax, @che.wax a close associate of yours has a very very good remix of this.

🟨🟧🟥

💿 @earthwindandfire - can’t hide love (@masters_at_work_official mix) (2002)

it makes me happy finding rarities like this, it makes me even happier to know other selectors that’ll get a kick out of it too. shoutout jade, ethan, callum - you’re all boss.

🟨🟧🟥

💿 michael jackson - burn this disco out (@thereflexmusic revision) (2019)

the reflex is a gigantic influence on me. there’s rarely a set that goes by without some reflex moments - and now i’m building up my collection of reflex records…. i feel armed like voltron pulling up to a set with these. secret weapons man, i swear.

🟨🟧🟥

💿 @shalamarfriends - friends (1982)

this was som
