Today we wish a Happy Heavenly Birthday to the great Dick Griffey; CEO of Soul Train Records and Solar Records.

Dick Griffey served in the navy as a medic. He became a night club owner along with Dick Barnett of Guys and Dolls. He was the biggest black concert promoter of his time representing Aretha, Stevie Wonder, Ike and Tina, The Jacksons, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye and many others. His contacts with the biggest black music stars made him key to bringing star names to Soul Train TV as the talent booker. He then formed the Soul Train Club and Soul Train Records with Don Cornelius.

He formed Solar Records, Constellation and J Hines Records. Without Dick Griffey we never would gave heard of Soul Train Gang, Carrie Lucas, The Whispers, Shalamar, Midnight Star, Lakeside, Dynasty, Calloway, The Deele, Babyface or Klymaxx. He became campaign manager for Jesse Jackson’s bid for President. He supported the Anti Apartheid movement. He built schools in the motherland. He also helped form Death Row Records. Most importantly he was also a husband and father. Dick Griffey we remember and salute you!
