Permanent Change Part 1 is out everywhere today!

The songs come from being right in the middle of things: slipping in streams, hiking in the woods, breaking the rules because sometimes it’s the right thing to do, and noticing the beauty in all of it. They come from the last moments of a season that somehow feels like it will never end.

The album is also the cumulative effort of some amazing people —

Chris Hansen takes my strange basement demos and turns them into actual songs, somehow knowing what to add and what to leave alone. He’s my best friend and greatest collaborator. If we got some horses and started robbing banks, we’d be set.

No one believes in me like Anya Marina. She finds magic in my music and my insanity that no one else seems to see. Her harmonies, ideas and inspiration run through all of these songs.

Hilary James is a brilliant orchestrator, of both music and human beings. She keeps the faith alive with her spirit and makes playing live feel like something bigger than it should. Partly because she always has a bag full of candy.

A few days after I first met John Courage, I broke my leg. Since then, I think we’ve connected by the fact that we’ve seen each other at our worst and best. He’s a brilliant guitar player who knows how to bring the soul out when the soul needs to be seen.

Pete Hanlon was an album-saving surprise. I only knew him peripherally as an amazing engineer, but when he got involved with the record, he brought an instinct for the spaces between things—the unwritten language that helped the songs become what they were supposed to be.

Kyle Kelly-Yahner, Lee Falco, Dan Ford and Pete Caigin played the drums. They found the groove, tied everything together and repeatedly blew my mind.

Brandon Morrison was brilliant on bass, Matthew Cullen did an amazing job engineering Onteora Lake. The same goes for Pete Caigin and Joe Colwell at Utopia. And Dan Coutant mastered the record—I trust his ears completely.

Julie Ruiz made the beautiful, understated artwork, as an inverted tribute to Last Light, which she also designed.

My name is on all of this music, but it has always been a collaboration. I’m lucky to have made it with these pe
