Boston and San Francisco dominate the biotech conversation.
But Research Triangle Park may be the most underestimated U.S. life science hub.

I have watched the RTP ecosystem from the inside: world-class universities, experienced scientific talent, CRO infrastructure, bio manufacturing and a lower burn rate for growing companies.

RTP is not “the next biotech hub.” It is already built. More founders are simply beginning to notice.

That’s a wrap on Worldwide Day of Play 2026 at The Makery at Boxyard! 🎉

We had an incredible day celebrating the power of play, creativity, and connection, and we couldn’t have done it without our amazing community partners!

A huge THANK YOU to:

@wegmans for bringing healthy snacks and fun games to keep our families fueled and playing!

@kidswhogivenonprofit for bringing games, energy and fun giveaways for our visitors!

@nc529 for being part of the celebration and helping families make the most of opportunities for their children.

@thertp for their generous support of Worldwide Day of Play and for helping make this celebration possible!

We’re so grateful to each of you and @nickelodeon and @assocofchildrensmuseums for helping make Worldwide Day of Play such a fun and memorable day for our community. Play brings us together—and we love having partners who believe in making more opportunities to play, learn and grow!

Earlier this week, we welcomed local friends and faculty to the opening of our new exhibit, "The Inner Passage: Photographs by Virginia McGee Richards." Thank you to @thertp for partnering with us to mount the show and for helping us bring so many people together to hear @virginiamcgeerichards discuss her work with @profblmkelley. September brings a season of change at TORC—and plenty of reasons to celebrate the people behind our trails.

William Blackmon is our Summer Volunteer Spotlight! From workdays to special events, William keeps showing up. Thank you to the Endurance Collective for celebrating his service with a private MTB skills session.

Good riding, great company at Briar Chapel’s Redesign Festival. Thanks to Tamara Sanders of Back Alley Bikes for the suspension clinic, and Amy and Andy of Breakaway Cafe for keeping everyone well fed.

Thank you, Alex Haley and Barry Evans, for years of stewardship at RTP. And thank you, Farris, for nearly two decades as a builder, ride leader, coach, mentor, and friend to this community. We’re wishing you the best in your next chapter with Pisgah Area SORBA.

More volunteers need more tools. Our $20,000 Summer Trail Revival will help equip crews across the Triangle with hand tools, power tools, safety equipment, and trail-work supplies. Help us welcome more volunteers and care for more miles: every.org/torc/f/summer-trail-revival

📅 On the calendar:
• Sept. 18–20: Old Fort camping trip
• Oct. 3: le tour de femme at Little River Regional Park
• Oct. 10: Volunteer Appreciation Day at Williamson Preserve—watch for private invitations. Want to get back into trail service? Email director@torc-nc.org.

I’m honored to be named to the @benedict_college Forty Under 40 Class of 2026. 💜💛

Benedict College did far more than prepare me academically. It helped shape the person, scientist, educator, and mentor I am today. It was at Benedict that I received the scientific foundation that gave me the confidence and preparation to pursue a PhD (at another HBCU, @howard1867), build a career in research, and ultimately dedicate my work to understanding the relationship between ancestry and health in African American communities.

What I gained at Benedict extended far beyond the classroom and laboratory. I found mentors who genuinely cared about my success, a community that challenged me to grow, and friendships that have lasted long after graduation. I learned the importance of excellence, service, purpose, and making sure that as you move forward, you create opportunities for others to move forward with you.

Every classroom I teach in, every student I mentor, every research question I pursue, and every community I have the privilege of serving carries something that began at BC.

As I think about what comes next, one of my greatest hopes is to build a stronger bridge between Benedict College and my research lab (@ashes_lab) at NC State, creating a pathway for students who look like me to see themselves in science, research, graduate school, and ultimately in spaces they may never have imagined were meant for them.

For everything Benedict College poured into me, I will always be grateful. See yal at homecoming⚡️

Forever a Tiger. 🐯💜💛

Our Quartets in Residence took the stage at A Tour of Art in RTP! 🎻🎨

Our students came together for an evening celebrating creativity across the Triangle, sharing their music surrounded by the work of incredible local artists.

Thank you to Triangle Community Foundation, Research Triangle Foundation, and Durham Art Guild for inviting our young musicians to be part of such a wonderful community event. We loved seeing music and visual art come together!

How is Raleigh turning ambitious climate action goals into projects and programs that improve people’s everyday lives? I got to speak about this at RTP180: Energy. This sold-out event included speed talks from some other amazing speakers: Sameer Parvathikar, Meredith Biechele, Nicholas Montoni, and Will Doran.

Thank you so much to @frontierrtp, @thertp and Cassandra Bennett for the invitation and for hosting a lovely event.

Check out the full event video in my bio!
