RODIAT RECALL (Episode 2)

If you attended a boarding school where low-cut hair was compulsory, this gist is for you. 😂

I attended a secondary school where every girl had to keep a low cut. In my final year (SSS 3), it became compulsory for all of us to stay in the school hostel so we could be closely monitored ahead of WAEC and JAMB.

Each hostel had an assigned barber—one for the boys and one for the girls.

The funny part? Whenever it was haircut day, the girls with thick, full hair would suddenly become hair stylists. 🤣 We'd press our hair down with our palms, flattening every strand so it wouldn't look full. The goal was simple: "Barber, abeg no notice me today."

Those with scanty hair had absolutely nothing to worry about. But those of us blessed with plenty of hair? Ah! We were the barber's favorite customers. There was no hiding.

Some girls even escaped the clipper completely. But that came with another problem—they had to keep hiding from the hostel mistress and the principal. If they were eventually caught, the punishment was brutal. Their hair would be shaved right down to the skin! 😭

Of course, I also tried my luck. After all, as the Yorubas say, "Ìrùn ni ẹwà obìnrin." Hair is a woman's beauty.

Sadly, luck was hardly ever on my side. My thick hair always exposed me, and I was almost always on the barber's list. 💔

One thing every girl in that hostel had in her cupboard was hair booster. 😂 The moment the haircut was over, we'd rush to have our bath, apply a generous amount of hair cream or hair booster, and pray for a miracle.

Our biggest prayer?

"God, let this hair grow overnight before school tomorrow... at least let us look presentable in front of our crushes." 😂😂

The boys also faced the same ordeal, but at least we girls had our berets to hide under. They had nowhere to run. 🤣

Looking back now, those moments were frustrating then, but they're some of the funniest memories I have from secondary school.

Life lately...

‎June 2025 has been a rollercoaster of emotions.
‎
‎Ladies and gentlemen, my 15th intake as a screenwriting tutor.
‎
‎With every intake, a part of me parts with them and a part of them remains with me.
‎
‎I don't know how much of me I can part away with. 😔
‎
‎Last day of class is always a moment of raw emotion and I had to comply even though I was heavy on medication.

‎As always, "the show must go on!"

Last Saturday, I attended the screenwriters masterclass with the amazing screenwriting duo @deechay5 and @tbakinbode and what a time I had.

My favourite thing to do is to learn and it was refreshing to have interactive moments while gleaning from them.

The day doubled as a ten-year celebration for @writersinkconcepts and we got to eat cake and some yummy jollof rice. 😁

Met some amazing writers @e_wealth1 @stolutionist_zaolat @eefomaa_ and many others. I had a great time. 💕
