If you've ever followed your mum to the market, I am sure you can relate to this👇

Apart from the stress and frustration that comes with shopping, you're always in awe of this one thing:

Her negotiating skills.

Every time I followed meimi to Lagos Island, I ended up pitying the traders.

"Don't worry, they will still see their gain,"
my mum would say everything I changed my countenance after every negotiation.

I didn't like it.

I thought it was a 'manage' mindset not an 'abundance' mindset.

I mean, why negotiate when you can afford it?

Sha, one day, I went to the market alone.

To get yams.

Meimi advised me to go to both aboki and Yoruba - price, compare and then go for the most affordable one.

I didn't answer o.

I shuno lie, I shuno steal, market runs isn't my thing at all.

I went to a Yoruba woman straight up! She had no customers unlike her competitors I walked past.

Pity.

She smiled on seeing me. That melted my heart.

I went for the 5-yam bundle.

"Nine thousand naira ni, iya mi,"

I didn't mind, but just to prove the negotiating skills that weren't there, I asked if she would let me pay #8,500.

I tried now, izinit?😭

"Oya, you're my first customer. I haven't..."

You see that statement ehn! Double pity.

I gave her nine thousand naira - more like I made up for being her first customer, since morning.

She packed my yams and off I went fulfilled.

I thought I had gotten the best deal until I passed by one of her competitors I used to do shakara.

"Oya bring #6,000. You know say na 5"

I turned my head o. Let me see if it's the same 5 that I bought.

It was.

Even better.

I couldn't go back for a refund - who would hear my story?🤣

So, I accepted my fate.

Stole the price - told meimi I bought it for #,6000 and refunded her #2,500.

What I didn't learn for free, I learnt in a hard way, with my money😹

Mother Knows Besttttttt 🎶

So, that's a weird story as Zaolat, the market bargainer 😂

But the point now is:

I have written a story that every daughter/child can relate to.

So relatable!

So, don't let go of every bargaining experience of yours!

Whenever I see it, my gut tells me it’s all shades of wrong.

Everything about it is so suspicious.

Only vague details, yet desperation makes people go for it.

So, I decided to write from a safe space to create awareness about the papers of doom.

They know there are many people who would do anything for a 'greener pasture'.

But the truth is, sometimes, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

1. I get irritated when I see kids stay and even watch their mouths as they discuss.
