This isn’t my last Europe post…sorry! But, I am officially back in Iowa.

I was in Austria to complete the Alternative Economic and Monetary Systems (AEMS) Program in Vienna.

For three weeks, I participated in lectures, discussions, collaborative projects, field experiences, and conversations centered on alternative economic systems, community wealth, climate change, inequality, sustainability, and lots more!

These experiences always come back to simply meeting cool people, and learning alongside them. People from around the world challenged perspectives I didn’t even realize I had. We debated ideas, questioned assumptions, and had conversations that pushed me to think beyond many of the capitalistic and/or American narratives I grew up with.

I’m incredibly grateful for this experience and excited to bring these new perspectives into my work in planning and design!

🔁 @richardboydbarrett Tonight the Irish government will decide to either sanction the apartheid state Israel or continue to be complicit in its brutality. In 1987, I witnessed the first Palestinian Intifada, completely by accident, and the world saw one of the most heavily armed militaries on earth brutalise, maim and kill unarmed civilians demanding freedom and dignity. From that moment, I committed myself to the struggle for justice in Palestine and it is directly what led me into the world of politics and the struggle for justice and equality in all corners of our society and across the globe.

For decades, Palestinians have faced military occupation, siege, illegal settlements and collective punishment, while governments around the world have failed to act.

Ireland, with our own history of colonial oppression, has a particular responsibility to stand firmly with oppressed people fighting for self-determination and freedom. We must honour our obligations under the Genocide Convention and international law by demanding immediate and meaningful sanctions on the Israeli state, including boycotts, divestment and the ending of all political, economic and military support that enables the continued destruction of Palestinian lives.

Web3 has been hyped as the future of digital freedom, a system where decentralization puts power in the hands of the people.

But here’s the real question: Are we actually building something different, or are we just recreating the same problems of Web2?

If Web3 follows the same pattern as Web2, we’ll just see the rise of even bigger, more centralized corporations, controlled by a select few behind closed doors. The same extraction-based economy, where a handful of players control the wealth and power, will simply continue under a new name.

But the real opportunity in Web3 lies in ownership. Right now, we have the tools to divest from harmful, predatory systems and create a new digital economy that actually benefits the people who participate in it. Imagine a future where users own the platforms they engage with, where communities control their own financial assets, and where innovation isn’t driven by a handful of corporations but by the collective power of individuals.

🚨 The stakes are high, and we’re at a turning point.
Will Web3 become another Web2, or will it finally shift power back to the people?

What do you think will Web3 live up to its promise?

Monopoly isn’t just a game, it’s a lesson in how our financial system was designed to work. The version we play today? It teaches competition, hoarding wealth, and crushing opponents. But what if there was another way?

The original game actually had two sets of rules—one that led to monopoly, and another that focused on shared prosperity, local reinvestment, and community wealth-building.

Somewhere along the way, we adopted the winner-takes-all mindset and forgot about the alternative that benefits everyone. But we don’t have to play by those rules.

🚨 It’s time to rethink how we use money, how we build wealth, and how we support the communities around us.
