What does getting better look like?

In a world with a million numbers and metrics, it’s really easy to judge everything off of a “Did the number go up?” mentality. If it did, you’re better. If it didn’t, you’re worse.

However, life’s way too complicated for that sometimes.

These are two clean and jerks, at about the same weight (technically 5lb different I think). But in that first video, I was 230 pounds, stressed out, unhappy, and considerably out of shape. Working out at a gym where I had just lost my coaching job, and couldn’t run a mile to save my life.

Second video, I’m around 200 pounds, working at a place I absolutely love (@thetraininglabnyc ) with a masters degree in Exercise Science, and able to move and do more than I could in a long time. Yeah the lift is the same, but held consistently when everything around it got better.

Same thing. But better.

Don’t get it twisted.

Just because life knocked you down doesn’t mean you’ve lost. Sometimes being down is just a season not your final destination.

how you react matters, Get back up. Lock back in.

You can’t always control what knocks you down, but you can control what you do next. don’t get comfortable down there.

I love a good plan. I love a detailed, structured plan.
I also love a simple, easy to follow plan.

Some days, that all goes out the window.

You may have not slept well. You may have the wrong equipment, or no time, or no facility. You may be in a bad mood. You may be hungry, tired, sad, anxious, angry, or a million other things.

On those days, anything you can do to get some activity in will help you. It doesn’t need to be amazing, it doesn’t need to be perfect, and it doesn’t even need to be your best day. Get yourself moving, get some approachable work in, work hard, and call it a day.

Like a car that’s been sitting out in the snow, just hop in, run the engine for a bit, keep everything in working order, and you’re good to go. Not every day is the Indy 500. But still put in good work when you can.

Progress isn’t always obvious, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. A lot goes into the little wins.

TAKE THE LITTLE VICTORIES WHEN LEARNING NEW THINGS

We all want to get better, of course. But remember the process of learning new things can take time, and being an expert on day 1 is not only uncommon, but it’s unreasonable to expect.

When you’re learning something new, the first day, two days, week, month, may be all about just nailing the basics. You may not even dive into “getting good” at the thing for a while, and that’s ok. Once the basics make sense, then we can and should start layering in more and more technical discussion.

I’ve seen too many coaches that love to hammer a million points of “well, technically the next thing we should work on is (blah blah blah)” rather than just letting the athlete take the day to enjoy what they’ve accomplished.

This unfortunately breeds a relationship with the athlete where they are constantly asking, “what did I do wrong” or even worse, constantly second guessing themselves because there’s too many things to keep track of. I have been guilty of this as well, but I’m trying to be better.

Coaches (and athletes) just slow down the learning process. This stuff takes time.

Big Dogs doing Big Dog stuff.

Still one of the coolest things I’ve got to do in my time in the fitness industry. Hopefully this is the first of many. Such a badass event from the team at RAD.

The goals may change, but the same energy is always still there.

Love to step back into some old shoes every now and again.
