Really interesting to hear from Owen at the MillenniumSeed Bank @kew.wakehurst and Rob from Forestart. Thanks to Charlotte @thetreecouncil for great hosting. Peak seed collection time right now and fascinating to hear about impact of climate change.

🌳 SAVE GINKGO ALLEY!

13 ginkgo trees line Oakwood Court, opposite Olympia. Seven are female—and could be felled.

Why? Their fleshy, fruit-like seeds fall in autumn, creating unpleasant smells and sometimes slippery pavements.

Residents’ concerns deserve practical solutions. But should removing mature trees be the answer?

After a summer of repeated heatwaves, their shade matters more than ever. A newly planted sapling cannot replace a mature canopy overnight.

RBKC is consulting on whether to retain these seven trees or fell and replace them. Let’s ask the council to explore seasonal cleaning and prompt seed collection before reaching for the chainsaw.

🌿 Trees cannot vote. But Londoners can speak up for them.

🚨 Have your say by Friday 16 October at 23:59.

A short paragraph is enough to share your views. You can also send a fuller response to trees@rbkc.gov.uk with the subject “Oakwood Court Ginkgo tree consultation”.

Seven mature trees. Decades of growth. A few minutes of your time could make a difference. 💚

A lovely Tree walk and talk yesterday for the Friends Of Markeaton Park. The weather couldn't have been more perfect, there was that Autumnal feel about it.
🌞
There are some fantastic specimen trees in the park, some hidden away and some very visible. From the original plantings of when it was the home of the Mundy's.
Very grateful for the folk that turned up and that paid a donation to the Friends group, all money goes back into the Walled Garden project for future projects, plants and materials.

Always remember to look up! 🌳🌲🍁🍂

Putting my tree knowledge to the test.

Since 2016, @mayorofldn has funded over 640,000 trees. Now we’re adding up to 5,000 more in areas most at risk from extreme heat, bringing shade where it’s needed most, alongside our target to grow London’s tree canopy by 10% by 2050.

I visited Kew Gardens to see how heatwaves are affecting our trees and how we’re working with their world-leading experts to choose the right species for London’s changing climate.

Welcome to this weeks #FloralishusTreeTuesday | London Plane - Beautifully Bare

There’s something rather magnificent about a tree with nowhere to hide.

We discovered this huge London plane (Platanus × hispanica) at @kewgardens totally leafless, its branches stretching upwards into one of those rare brilliant crystal clear blue Winter London skies.

Without its enormous leaves, suddenly we can see the architecture of the tree itself. And what an architecture it is.

A few things you might not know:

• Its family history is still intriguing. The London Plane is generally considered a hybrid between the American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis), although exactly where and when that first crossing happened has long been debated.

• That beautiful patchwork bark isn’t just decorative. Plane trees regularly shed pieces of their outer bark as they grow, revealing patches of cream, olive and grey underneath, creating one of London’s most recognisable tree trunks.

• Look up in Winter and you’ll often spot little baubles. The round, bristly seed heads can remain hanging from bare branches long after the leaves have fallen, before gradually breaking apart and releasing their tiny fluffy fruits.

• London and its Planes go back centuries. Their tolerance of compacted soil, pruning and difficult urban conditions helped make them one of the capital’s defining street trees, creating green corridors through an increasingly built-up city.

Perhaps that’s why we love seeing them bare.

In Summer, the leaves command our attention. In Winter, it’s the trunk, bark, branches and sheer scale of the tree that take over.

So next time you’re walking through London on one of those rare crisp days when the Winter sky turns blue, look up. Some trees really don’t need leaves to put on a show.

Tonight we bring you this week’s Lichen Editorial - a collection of images from a variety of accounts that were all part of the inspiration for this week’s project.

In our opinion Lichen is absolutely fascinating, and the closer you get to it, the more interesting it becomes (as shown in some of the incredible photos in this post). With an amazing array of beautiful greens and greys, patterns, shapes and textures - we believe that Lichen can offer amazing inspiration for nature inspired interior design ideas. What do you think?

A huge thank you to everyone who has participated in our project this week, your photos are gorgeous 🩶💚
