Winged seeds are usually collected from the tree when they are still slightly green. They need to be dry before they are stored, especially if they are collected when damp from the morning dew or rain! #SeedGatheringSeason by @thetreecouncil

Trees that produce fleshy fruits are the most time-consuming to process, but that doesn't mean the process isn't fun! As much of the fleshy material needs to be removed, using a rough surface such as a paving slab can speed up the seed-cleaning process!

Nuts will produce a radicle, which is known as the first root. This can be encouraged by keeping the seeds in a bucket of leaf mould and turning them gently so they don't rot. Once you see the radicle start to sprout, you can then plant the seed!

WIN a magical Wildwood bundle!

The Tree Council is excited to be teaming up with Black Bear to celebrate the release of LAIKA's enchanting new stop-motion adventure, Wildwood, with a brilliant competition for our followers ahead of its cinema release on 23 October.

From the hands that made Coraline, LAIKA presents a new stop-motion animation with trees and nature at its heart. From living and breathing ivy to magical flowers and birch trees, and of course, the great Council Tree, Wildwood brings the magical side of trees and nature to life.

As champions of trees, we're especially delighted to see ancient trees reflected in the story.

Putting my tree knowledge to the test.

Since 2016, @mayorofldn has funded over 640,000 trees. Now we’re adding up to 5,000 more in areas most at risk from extreme heat, bringing shade where it’s needed most, alongside our target to grow London’s tree canopy by 10% by 2050.

I visited Kew Gardens to see how heatwaves are affecting our trees and how we’re working with their world-leading experts to choose the right species for London’s changing climate. taken in Kew Gardens by @thetreecouncil

Our third and final Seed Gathering Online talk is next Thursday 15 October, 1pm - 2pm.

Join us for a conversation with two professional seed gatherers: Robert Chapman, Seed Production Manager at Forestart and Owen Blake, UK Seed Collections Officer at the Millennium Seed Bank, as they share their experiences collecting tree seed across the UK.

Hosted by Charlotte Benham, The Tree Council Science & Research Action Manager, the panel will discuss the realities of seed gathering, from seasonal planning and fieldwork to the challenges presented by changing weather patterns and our shifting climate. They will also share insights from current projects, stories from their careers, and lessons learned working on the front line of growing trees from seed.

After a summer of record-breaking heat, schools across London can now apply for Young Tree Champions: London's Living Labs, a free, nature-based, outdoor learning programme from The Tree Council and the Mayor of London’s Green Roots Fund, aiming to combat the worst effects of a rapidly changing climate.

Successful schools will each receive around £1000 to implement green solutions, alongside regular visits from Tree Council experts, who will support teachers and pupils to add green to school grounds, and deliver sustainable heat, flooding and air pollution mitigation benefits.

The Tree Council will train teachers and pupils, providing free climate science monitoring equipment and guidance on analysing existing environmental conditions on their site.

Young Tree Champions: London's Living Labs is now open for applications until November 1. Please visit the link in our bio to find out more and submit your application.

Several members of the public have emailed us to report seeing some trees flowering in autumn. Our Director of Trees, Science and Research, Jon, has also noted that crab apples are blooming during this time of year.

Who else has noticed this happening? Let us know where you are in the country and what tree species. by @thetreecouncil
