An unknown destination and spontaneous route planning – The Unknown Race is one of the most exciting so-called ‘unsupported bikepacking’ races in Europe. An hour before the start, participants receive their first set of coordinates – and then have to find their own way over several days, without relying on help from others. It’s a race that pushes every participant to their limits and casts serious doubt on any goals they’ve set for themselves.

One more trip down memory lane to @theunknown_race. For me 881km with 16732m of climbing through Spain, finishing in 53h and 45mins. It still feels unreal, that all those memories fit into so little time. And all the rollercoaster of feelings.

I wrote it all down, you can find a glimpse of it here in English in this post or the whole thing on the @triple2_cycling website (link in bio. They also gave me all their nice merino wool kit for the race, which was the comfiest ever. Thank you again :) (unpaid ad)

🚴‍♂️🌧️ UNKNOWN RACE 2026 🌍

On March 31st, 2026, at 9:00 AM, the start of the legendary @theunknown_race took place in Reus, Spain. After battling through one of the toughest unsupported races known for its brutal weather conditions, the rider @straps_377 from Styria, Austria crossed the finish line on April 2nd at around 4:30 AM. 💪🔥

The Unknown Race is more than a competition — it’s a challenge of endurance, resilience, and self-reliance. Open to riders of all backgrounds, ages, fitness levels, and bike types, it celebrates the spirit of adventure and equality for everyone.

As an unsupported race, participants rely solely on their own power:
❌ No drafting
❌ No assistance cars
❌ No public transport
✅ Pure determination

We at Katadyn were proud to support this incredible event by sponsoring 15 BeFree Bottles 💧 and contributing to a charity organization that shares the same passion for adventure and community.

Apparently before a race is after a race. While I am already on my way to the @lostdot101 let me drop some memories from @theunknown_race in April.

With the checkpoints only getting released one after another on the checkpoints, you can’t plan much beforehand, just be prepared for all kinds of weather. This time it was not the rain making it hard, but super strong winds - 40km/h and up to 100km/h gusts (and of course most of it headwind) - once we were nearly sliding off the mountain.

A race particularly suited to pairs: I was fortunate to get covered from some of the wind, but also wasted no time on the checkpoints, as @mycle.kneip already pushed ahead, got the coordinates and had the route ready, when I finally arrived.

We messed a bit with sleep, riding through the first night, with 1 hour freezing rest in an ATM cubicle, then 6 comfortable hours in an hotel the next night (along with a double serving of pasta). That should have covered for the upcoming night as well, but the race was shortend a bit due to the wind.

In an silly effort to not lose 2 more places on the last k’s, we flew up the last 4k hill in red numbers and reached Reus at 2am (as usual a night finish).

Had a blast 🤝 @mycle.kneip and would absolutely do it again!

The Unknown Race - a race I hadn’t even heard of a year ago. A race that immediately caught my attention because of its unique format. You don’t know the route. There are mandatory checkpoints you have to visit, BUT you don’t know their locations. One hour before the start, you receive the coordinates of the first checkpoint, and once you arrive there, you find the coordinates for the next one - and that continues throughout the entire race.

I went there as a photographer, never expecting that by the end of the race the participants would be asking me when I had last slept and whether my sixth coffee might be a little too much. I spent the race driving along the course with one of the organizers. We had lunch at a roadside bar with the last riders in the race, chased the middle of the pack across the endless Spanish wilderness, woke up for a sunrise that never happened, and even marked what was probably the most beautiful checkpoint of the entire race - a checkpoint that nobody actually reached.

And despite all of that, we still made it back in time to welcome the winner at the finish line - a madman who completed the roughly 1,000 km route in just two days.
Guys from @theunknown_race , thank you so much for this adventure - I will never forget it! ❤️

And I can’t not mention the wonderful @saskiacmartin , who was the second photographer at the race. Seeing her absolutely beautiful photos every evening pushed me to give 200% of myself so that my own shots wouldn’t fall behind.
