First thought in my head after leaving my apartment yesterday. It was 95°F (35°C).

A couple of weeks ago, I was lying beneath the night sky in Hawaii with my sister, looking up at more stars than I think I’ve ever seen before.

We talked about how some of those stars are so far away that their light has taken thousands of years to reach us. Some of them may not even exist anymore, but their light continues to find us.

Then we talked about how, no matter where two people are in the world, they can still look up at the same sky and see the same stars.

I don’t know why, but I find that incredibly comforting.

If your heart is also tender right now, I hope you are extraordinarily kind to yourself.

A very old piece that somehow found me again.

I highly recommend having nostalgic friends. This piece is inspired by my friend’s text message two weeks before the trip, when he said “The weekend will come and go fast. Pretty soon, the Chicago trip will just be a memory.”

I wrote this piece last April, inspired by a conversation with a friend about the unpredictable arrival of spring in Chicago. Walking home last night in near-freezing temperatures, it once again feels very fitting this year.

I have a complicated, love-hate relationship with writing and journaling. Maybe this is why.

I wrote this a few weeks ago after taking care of a patient with end-stage congestive heart failure. There were no more treatments left to offer, and his reaction has stayed with me.

The other night, I left the hospital at 9pm. I was exhausted. A patient was dying. I walked through the blistering Chicago wind to my car and remember thinking, “god, this is cold.” And then, as has been happening a lot lately, my mind jumped to the fact that it’s January. A new year. And how much I want to do in 2026 because last year slipped away while I was just trying to survive a debilitating health issue.

Then I thought about a conversation I had recently with a friend, about how the calendar year is really just a human construct. Time doesn’t reset in January. It just keeps moving forward. Somehow, that thought comforted me.

This piece was born in that moment, sitting in my car with the heater on full blast.

Perhaps that’s where the thaw begins.
