It’s the story. It’s always been about the story.

My name is Kevin, but I go by K.Y. Chang in my writings. I am a 34 year old cardiologist, father to two beautiful dogs, Peloton enthusiast, coffee addict, and certified yoga teacher living in Chicago.

As a child, I was always fascinated by stories. I loved losing myself in the fantasy lands of books and movies, and I spent a lot of time daydreaming as an escape. When I was not in this other world, in retrospect, I was always observing people, reading emotions, attuning to my surroundings, and trying to make sense of what often didn’t make sense through the lens I viewed my world.

As an adult, I have always been drawn to people and their stories. Whether meeting travelers while backpacking across Europe or caring for ill patients in hospitals, I wanted to know who they were and what they had experienced.

It’s gotten me far and wide in my life and career so far. But in getting to know the world and all that it asked of me, I neglected the one story I never got to read and learn about, my own, until a near-death car crash and its aftermath killed me in every sense of my being. It was in this space of existential pain that I realized I didn’t even know who I was. It was here that I started writing and getting to know myself.

Since I began this journey, I’ve been inspired by many writers, poets, and authors. As a creature of habit, I always wondered, “Why do they write what they write? How do they craft such beautiful art?”

So, in that vein, here, I have shared what is the tip of the iceberg, with all honesty, transparency, and vulnerability, about who I am, what I write, and why I write.

Through my writings, I hope you find something that moves you, resonates with you, stirs something within you, inspires you, lifts you up, and most importantly, reminds you, “you are not alone” in this human experience called life.

A couple of weeks ago, I was lying beneath the night sky in Hawaii with my sister, looking up at more stars than I think I’ve ever seen before.

We talked about how some of those stars are so far away that their light has taken thousands of years to reach us. Some of them may not even exist anymore, but their light continues to find us.

Then we talked about how, no matter where two people are in the world, they can still look up at the same sky and see the same stars.

I don’t know why, but I find that incredibly comforting.

I highly recommend having nostalgic friends. This piece is inspired by my friend’s text message two weeks before the trip, when he said “The weekend will come and go fast. Pretty soon, the Chicago trip will just be a memory.”
