Trump’s man lost. Brazil won.

Brazilians just handed President Lula a historic fourth term. 64.2 million votes. Over 4 million more than Trump ally Flávio Bolsonaro. Lula finished second in round one and came roaring back, the first comeback like it since Brazil’s democracy returned in the 1980s.

And they did it with everything stacked against them.

Indigenous voters in the Amazon live up to 556 miles from the polls, AP reports. Up to five days by boat. A court in Pará had to force the government to get them there. They crossed rivers and wildfire smoke anyway. They rode motorcycles down dirt roads anyway.

In the cities, Lula says 40 percent of São Paulo’s buses vanished on election day. A court in Bahia ordered a transport official arrested. Voters were “barred from voting.” They found a way anyway.

Online, Lula’s campaign accused Meta of burying his posts and throttling his reach. Brazil’s electoral court ordered Meta to stop interfering. Meta denies it. Lula still won.

Trump backed the Bolsonaros from the start. He called Lula a “radical left lunatic” in 2022, called the first round a “very, very big victory” for Bolsonaro, and Lula has accused his administration of punishing Brazil with tariffs. Reuters reported two State Department officials pushed sanctions to weaken Lula. Now Flávio, just like his father in 2022, refuses to accept the result and wants the election annulled. Reuters, citing experts, says that is unlikely.

Lula’s answer: “This election was a defeat for denialism, a defeat for lies.” And: “This country will not accept being anyone’s backyard.”

This is what people power looks like. Indigenous families, river communities, bus riders and young people in the streets beat bus cuts, Big Tech and a Trump ally.

America, take notes. Our turn is in 8 days. Vote early. Vote progressive down ballot. Vote today.
