1971 ◍ 2nd International Trade Fair, Accra

These were the years of Ghana’s Second Republic, half a decade after Nkrumah’s overthrow and just months before the 1972 coup by Acheampong. Following the years of Pan-African optimism and the massive move to industrialization, austerity measures were put in place to address Ghana’s high debt. Cocoa prices were also dropping.

Meanwhile, graphic artists at the Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation was designing this set of gracious stamps dedicated to the 2nd International Trade Fair, to showcase the participant countries’ progress in industry, agriculture and technology.

Stamps were tangible clues of the political aspiration, approach towards economy and visual taste of the ruling class as it evolved day by day.

In a recent conversation with my good friend @bebssennor we discuss community building and ways in which the role of the artist/cultural producers can make a shift within our generation and beyond. You can find the full interview on YouTube. Everyone has a role to play in the changing narrative but first let's make sure equality is a starting point and not a destination. Many thanks to all the support
