The Writer’s Mark
The Sheila Legge Series’
Natasha Higdon & Stephanie Prieto
Trincado
The Writer’s Mark is a surrealist company, based in Brighton that focuses on celebrating/exploring the worlds’ of surreal writers and visionaries.
‘Sheila’ is the first of three instalments from The Writer’s Mark at this evening’s
event, paying homage to Sheila Legge (1911-1949) - writer and performance artist. This piece of physical theatre explores Legge’s experiences as a wife and mother, and her subsequent decision to abandon these roles. Whilst her life during this period is largely ambiguous, it was defined by her vital involvement in the English Surrealist Movement and her iconic appearance as ‘The Surrealist Phantom of Sex Appeal’ at the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition; which was inspired by Salvador Dali’s surreal Painting. This performance is deeply rooted in the societal pressures placed upon women during that decade, with an unwavering sense of hope and desire to be part of something special - a place she felt she belonged. What do you see that I can’t?
This piece is a reaction to Sheila’s memory and the acceptance of ‘dead ends’ in finding out further information about her. Sheila is photographed staring at an installation called The Daily Sketch, yet there is no information about this and how it connects to her artistry.
This piece is a reaction to ‘Perturbation’ and the work that is still missing - as referred to as Fragments’ Legge
What happened to Sheila Legge? What grants us a memory? What goes beyond the famous photographs of Sheila Legge in London clutching on to a prosthetic leg, as she stood by the paintings at The Surrealist Exhibition in 1936? ‘This piece honours her legacy however brief, dying young at the age of 37, finding any evidence of her writing was not easy - but you can find her short story entitled, I Have Done My Best For You (1936). On Thursday 24 September, The Adelaide Salon came to The Brighton Beach House to open a new 2026/27 artistic season, with Talks, Live performance art, live music, art and video installations across the Loft and Rock Room level. Another spectacular evening with our amazing Salon crowd and incredible artist performances. The energy and atmosphere was so generous and electric.
We also welcomed the autumn issue of ROSA Magazine and reflected with Hedley Swain , CEO of Brighton & Hove Museums on the success of the inaugural Royal Pavilion & Adelaide Salon Art Gala, a first in 175 years, future collaborations and the art scene here in Brighton.

Thank you to every artist and talker, our guests, everyone who joined the conversation, ROSA and Soho House for sharing this journey. Over the coming days, we’ll share the performances and the people behind them in more detail.

Thank you everyone for your unique spirit, endeavour and support,

Pascal & Paulina ❤️❤️

A fabulous night at The Adelaide Salon at Soho House Brighton - filled with art, live performance, interesting conversations and so many wonderful people.

A few glimpses here of Isobel Smith @isobelxsmith , Aisling Zambon @aislingzambon , The Writer’s Mark @thewritersmark @stephiprieto , Yara Warick @exotic_yarra , Tim Lea Young @internationalfanatic , Mon Jeune @monjeuneband and many more.

There was so much happening simultaneously that I kept wishing I could clone myself - every room seemed to hold another performance, conversation or piece of work. Inevitably, there were so many brilliant artists I simply didn’t manage to see.

Thank you Paulina and Pascal for bringing such a brilliant evening together. 🤍

Something a bit different for a change. Went in to Edinburgh to photograph the Tattoo flypast. Very disappointing as it turned out, but did take a few pics of the street activities.

Nowhere near as many as I remember from years gone by, but I assume that’s down to controls over license and performance locations.

When the chair is an invitation to step into another world.

Completely immersed in the real and surreal world created by Natasha Higdon @thewritersmark and Stephanie Prieto Trincado. @stephiprieto
Perturbation was captivating, transporting us on a visceral journey through one woman’s inner world - strange, poignant and quietly unforgettable. It lingered long after the performance ended.

The Adelaide Salon & Royal Pavilion presents: Performance: SHELIA • PERTURBATION • LEGGE Artists: Natasha Higdon & Stephanie Prieto Trincado in a trilogy of live performances

SHELIA pays homage to the remarkable yet largely overlooked surrealist writer and performance artist Sheila Legge. The work explores her experiences as a wife and mother, her decision to abandon those prescribed roles, and her vital contribution to the English Surrealist Movement. It recalls her legendary appearance as The Surrealist Phantom of Sex Appeal during the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London, revealing the hopes, pressures and artistic ambitions of a woman determined to belong within one of the most radical artistic movements of the twentieth century.
PERTURBATION, co-created by Natasha Higdon and Stephanie Prieto Trincado, draws inspiration from the first International Surrealist Exhibition held in Britain in 1936. Through personified mime, physical theatre and prop manipulation, the performers move through the space disrupting expectations, shifting through surrealist hieroglyphics, fragments of history and symbolic encounters that continue to influence art, literature and theatre today.
LEGGE asks a simple yet profound question: What happened to Sheila Legge? Beyond the iconic photographs of a woman with flowers covering her face, clutching a prosthetic leg amongst the paintings, who was she? This final performance honours her enduring legacy, celebrating an artist whose life was brief yet whose influence continues to resonate through generations of artists exploring surrealism, performance and the possibilities of the imagination. #artsalon #theadelaidesalon #liveart #royalpavilion #artgala

Thank you to all our phenomenal guests, artists, sponsors and supporters for joining us for the inaugural Royal Pavilion & The Adelaide Salon Art Gala.
We reawakened one of Britain’s most extraordinary landmarks as a living contemporary salon. After 175 years the Royal Pavilion once again became a home for art, music, critical thought, heritage, identity and community, casting a light on international, national and Sussex artists.
This remarkable evening marks the new partnership between Brighton & Hove Museums and The Adelaide Salon, supporting the palace’s future and contemporary arts in Brighton. We are deeply moved by the generosity, enthusiasm and belief shown by everyone making this vision a reality.
Thank you for being a part of this exciting adventure. We look forward to expanding our horizons together at our next Art Gala with the Royal Pavilion.

All our love Paulina & Pascal xx
