Edinburgh here we come…📢

We are delighted to announce that our one hour show of Perturbation is going to be performed at a new physical venue in Edinburgh - Teatro Fisico - a venue dedicated to the practices of Jacques Lecoq. We are honoured to be their special guests performing Monday 17th August - 4pm.

Perturbation is new work that is part of The Sheila Legge Series - first performed in Brighton at The Adelaide Salon Pavilion Gala. This piece pays homage to Sheila Legge (1911-1949) – a writer and performance Artist who is known for her involvement within the Surrealist Movement. This performance is inspired by key events in Shelia Legge’s life.

Through use of personified mime, physical theatre and prop manipulation Natasha Higdon and Stephanie Prieto Trincado move through the space - come and watch as they melt and shift through surrealist hieroglyphics of fragments from Shelia Legge’s encounters, from her friendship with David Gascoyne to her meeting with Salvador Dalí; moments in time that have shaped art, literature and theatre – as they seek to discover - what happened to Sheila Legge?

The Writer’s Mark
The Sheila Legge Series’
Natasha Higdon & Stephanie Prieto
Trincado
The Writer’s Mark is a surrealist company, based in Brighton that focuses on celebrating/exploring the worlds’ of surreal writers and visionaries.
‘Sheila’ is the first of three instalments from The Writer’s Mark at this evening’s
event, paying homage to Sheila Legge (1911-1949) - writer and performance artist. This piece of physical theatre explores Legge’s experiences as a wife and mother, and her subsequent decision to abandon these roles. Whilst her life during this period is largely ambiguous, it was defined by her vital involvement in the English Surrealist Movement and her iconic appearance as ‘The Surrealist Phantom of Sex Appeal’ at the 1936 London International Surrealist Exhibition; which was inspired by Salvador Dali’s surreal Painting. This performance is deeply rooted in the societal pressures placed upon women during that decade, with an unwavering sense of hope and desire to be part of something special - a place she felt she belonged. What do you see that I can’t?
This piece is a reaction to Sheila’s memory and the acceptance of ‘dead ends’ in finding out further information about her. Sheila is photographed staring at an installation called The Daily Sketch, yet there is no information about this and how it connects to her artistry.
This piece is a reaction to ‘Perturbation’ and the work that is still missing - as referred to as Fragments’ Legge
What happened to Sheila Legge? What grants us a memory? What goes beyond the famous photographs of Sheila Legge in London clutching on to a prosthetic leg, as she stood by the paintings at The Surrealist Exhibition in 1936? ‘This piece honours her legacy however brief, dying young at the age of 37, finding any evidence of her writing was not easy - but you can find her short story entitled, I Have Done My Best For You (1936). Wow - what a journey this work has been on…What began as three installations at The Royal Pavilion Gala with @theadelaidesalon to then a one hour show in both Brighton and The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Myself and the talented @stephiprieto are glad to bring this work back to a new audience - always with the intention to raise awareness of The Writer and to share this through movement - the body. With no sound for the audience this time, performing in a glass box @sohohouse, the audience looking in as Sheila was looking out - an interesting juxtaposition. Thank you @theadelaidesalon for bringing us all together on a night of celebration for the contemporary art scene here in Brighton. What an incredible team of artists 💫

Here is an insert of the work performed as part of The Sheila Legge Series:

SHEILA

This performance paid homage to Sheila Legge (1911–1949) – writer and performance artist. This fragment of physical theatre explored Legge’s experiences
as a wife and mother, and her subsequent decision to abandon these roles to explore a life as an artist in London.

WHAT DO YOU SEE THAT I CAN’T?

This piece is a reaction to Sheila’s memory and the acceptance of ‘dead ends’ in finding out further information about her. Sheila is photographed staring at an installation called ‘The Daily Sketch’, yet there is no information about this and how it connects to her artistry. This piece is a reaction to ‘Perturbation’ and the work that is still missing – as referred to as ‘Fragments.’

LEGGE

What happened to Sheila Legge? What grants us a memory? What goes beyond the famous photographs of
Sheila Legge in London clutching on to a prosthetic leg, as she stood by the paintings at The Surrealist Exhibition
in 1936? ‘This piece honours her legacy however brief, dying young at the age of 37, finding any evidence of her
writing was not easy – but you can find her short story entitled, ‘I Have Done My Best For You (1936).’

Thank you again to everyone who has shared audience feedback with us from our show in Edinburgh. This scene seemed to resonant with a lot of people - the struggle between being a wife - mother - artist. Thank you again.

“The “loss” of her first child, her inner conflict was portrayed with raw and disturbing intensity.”
