HAPPY ASEXUALITY AWARENESS WEEK!! guess what? I’m proud to be #asexual 🖤🩶🤍💜 & this week much to even MY surprise, I’m coming out on the #aromantic spectrum! send this to anyone who’s asexual that you know & are proud of🥹I’m lucky to know almost a dozen…they joke I’m a 🧲:p

I needed their support & #asexualawareness bc even though I knew implicitly since I was 10 that I was asexual & queer, I wasn’t always proud to be this way. some days I’m still not, just like anyone isn’t proud to be themselves some days…but I get the sense that the world doesn’t rly want me to celebrate this identity. or at least, it doesn’t celebrate it with me:( It’s not that I’m being dismissed or judged all the time, it’s just that raw human sexuality is there in almost everything we do—the undertones btwn male & female friends (or any combo of friends in queer dynamics), the objectification of women’s bodies, the love ballads & romanticization in almost every piece of music (67% of popular songs mention love, 30% sex), the obsession over the idea that relationships will free us from ourselves/our self hate/our pain, the romantic gestures & holidays reserved only for partners—not friends (unless you’re my friend ofc!! 😘), the sex scenes, pornography, the failed bechdel tests with other girls (no hate, I’ve also failed the bechdel test quite a few times😝)

but do you get it? it’s all around us. & when you don’t participate in the traditional way, people might other you or shame you. me? I’m done feeling shame.

so I made my costume the scariest thing of all: taboos. because I want to screw the sh*t out of them. for all the times we are called crazy or weird or for all the times people think we can be someone we aren’t. It’s not their fault... sometimes I wanted to be that other person too. but I’m not, I’m just me. & you’re just you! we all deserve the chance to BE PROUD. I 🩷 ppl for who they are, & Ik now i can be loved too—even if not singularly or sexually (listen to the song lyrics:) I rly want to use this acc to redefine our conception of love as all-consuming or possessive🙏🏻thx for being here🫶🏻🥺

Today marks the start of ACE week 🖤 🩶 🤍 💜

We celebrate the asexual community and shine our Spotlight on @theyasminbenoit, a model, activist and writer helping more people feel seen, understood and proud of who they are.

Since publicly coming out as aromantic and asexual in 2017, Yasmin has challenged misconceptions and championed greater visibility for both communities.

Her movement, #ThisIsWhatAsexualLooksLike, carries a simple, powerful message: there is no one way to look or dress, and no one else gets to define your identity.

Asexuality is a spectrum, and everyone’s experience is unique.

Some asexual people experience romantic attraction, some don’t, but all experiences are valid and beautiful.

It's Ace Week. Asexual people face conversion practices, violence, and medical harm, and most of it never makes it into a report.

Our new discussion paper, developed in collaboration with @theyasminbenoit and ace advocates from 10 countries, documents what ace people face and where the law leaves them out.

In the U.K., asexual people were the group most likely to be offered conversion practices. Niger's new penal code names asexual people in a ban on "LGBTQIA+ practices." And no UN member state names asexuality in its national nondiscrimination law.

The paper ends with questions. We want policymakers, donors, and queer movements to work through them with ace communities.

Here’s to Asexual Awareness Week! 💜⁠

The 25-31 October is Asexual Awareness Week, or ‘Ace Week’, referring more broadly to all sexualities spanning across the ace spectrum.⁠
⁠
Asexual people experience little-to-no sexual attraction.⁠
⁠
Yasmin Benoit is advocating for the inclusion and protection of asexual people around the world. As she puts it:⁠ “Universal human rights protections and laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation should be understood to include asexual people.”⁠
⁠
Currently, asexual people are not legally protected from discrimination, and many people with sexualities on the ace spectrum describe exposure to harmful conversion practices.⁠
⁠
It’s time we flipped the script on the way we speak about ace sexualities - they are not a problem to be fixed, and all ace sexualities are valid.⁠

In her new partnership with Outright International, Yasmin shares her findings about the ways asexual people are impacted by discrimination in 2026.⁠

Researcher, model, and activist Yasmin Benoit worked with Outright International on a report documenting abuse and discrimination against asexual people.

The research includes focus groups with advocates from ten countries, analyzed alongside existing studies. Participants described conversion practices, violence, and barriers to healthcare and community support.

We’re thrilled to open our new display exploring the history of conversion practices and the ongoing work to get a ban passed through Parliament.

We celebrated with a fantastic private view, bringing together familiar faces and many of those working to push the bill forward.

💜 What does asexuality mean?

Asexuality (often shortened to ace) is a sexual orientation where someone experiences little or no sexual attraction to others. Asexuality is a spectrum, and every ace person’s experience is unique. Some asexual people experience romantic attraction, some don’t, and being asexual doesn’t mean someone can’t experience love, intimacy or meaningful relationships. ❤️

There is no one way to be ace, and nobody should ever feel pressured to justify their identity or prove who they are.

At Essex Pride, we welcome everyone, celebrate diversity, and stand together in love, acceptance and solidarity. 🫶

Meet the amazing speakers at our upcoming free webinar on LGBTQI Youth & Conversion Practices planned next Wednesday 14 October at 12:00-13:30 CEST! 💜

During this conversation, a panel of three incredible experts will exchange on the realities of conversion practices affecting young LGBTQI people today.

✨ Yasmin Benoit (she/her), a British model and multi-award-winning asexual activist who notably started the #ThisIsWhatAsexualLooksLike movement, co-founded International Asexuality Day, and was the first asexual person to win a British LGBT Award.

✨ Jana Hugo (She/her), an intersex ally and Senior Policy Officer at OII Europe who has worked on advocacy related to banning intersex genital mutilation, legal protections against discrimination and hate, the impact of the anti-gender movement on intersex rights.

✨ Rylan (they/them), a Belgian researcher who looks closely at care within trans activism. Their PhD work explores how anti-gender politics attack trans lives in Belgium and what that means for the community fighting back.

Through a moderated panel discussion, speakers will explore how conversion practices manifest across different contexts, their impact on individuals and communities, current policy and legal responses, and what meaningful prevention, protection and support can look like beyond prohibition alone.
