Healing does not always ask us to go deeper. Sometimes it asks us to notice where there is room to move.

Resistance can tell us something about our capacity. About what feels safe enough to approach, what may need more time, and where there is already an opening for change.

Working with what is available allows healing to unfold without asking the body to move faster than it can safely follow.

In this episode of In This Body, clinical psychologist and yoga therapist Dr. Stephanie Minchin ( @theyogapsychologist ) joins Ailey to explore what becomes possible when psychology and yoga come together. They move through nervous system awareness, trauma, Internal Family Systems, embodiment, and the role of curiosity and safety in creating meaningful change.

🧠 Understanding the relationship between yoga, trauma and nervous system regulation.

Dr. Stephanie Minchin
Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist | The Yoga Psychologist
Specialisation: Trauma-Informed Practice, Yoga Therapy
Regulatory Body: HCPC | BPS
Based in: London, England

The amygdala plays an important role in detecting threats and initiating the body’s protective response. Following trauma, this response can become more sensitive, contributing to heightened vigilance and reactivity.
In this reel, Dr. Stephanie Minchin explores how chanting, breathing and movement may influence the brain’s stress response. She discusses the role of vagal pathways, GABA and the prefrontal cortex in understanding yoga’s potential contribution to emotional regulation.
🧘Yoga may offer complementary support for mental wellbeing, with individual needs and experiences guiding its use.

What an incredible few days at the Transform Trauma Conference.

I’m leaving feeling inspired, challenged, and reminded of just how important it is that we keep talking about trauma , not only in the therapy room, but in the conversations we have with one another.

One of my biggest takeaways was that connection matters. That’s what these pictures represent to me.

The connection with these ladies was essential for me. My brain was flooded with new information and ideas were sparked but I needed a space to reflect, to consolidate but to switch off from the content.

What was even more special was the different stages of the relationships. With Prudence we have known each other for years on social media and met for the first time last year. During the week we actually had time physically together to grow our friendship, which felt so right. With Steph we had never met in person before and having the time to connect off of our screens was delightful. Then Amanda by chance we sat next to each other and found out we are both Forensic Psychologist which is so surprising as you rarely bump into another in the wild.

We all chatted like we had known each other for years and shared things that you just wouldn’t in other environments. So this connection as well as all of the micro-connections throughout the week felt so good for the soul. To connect with others and feel that shared desire and drive was for me what topped off this week.

I will of course share my learning points but I felt compelled to share this first.

Last weekend I spent two days at the @healthoptimisationsummit, and here’s what stuck with me most. 🧠✨

@beargrylls on leadership and fear. Louise Newson @menopause_doctor on hormones and why we’re still under-treating women. @drjudithjoseph on joy as a leadership skill, not a luxury. @juliabradbury and @lizearleme on why nature isn’t optional. @iceman_hof at 67, with the heart age of an 18 year old - shows what he is doing works!

Different speakers, different fields - and almost every single one landed on the same message: we’ve overcomplicated wellness. Community, nature, protein, fibre, light, rest and joy. That’s most of it.

The best part wasn’t even the speakers though. I went with my best friend @theyogapsychologist and got to spend two days surrounded by 4,500 people who genuinely care about the same things we do.

Save this one, there’s a lot in here. 📌

What is yoga therapy? It works differently to talking therapy.

Dr. Stephanie Minchin
Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist | The Yoga Psychologist
Specialisation: Trauma-Informed Practice, Yoga Therapy
Regulatory Body: HCPC | BPS
Based in: London, England

🧠Yoga therapy was first defined in the 1920s by Kuvalayananda, who argued that medical conditions could be treated at both the physical and the physiological level.

The British Council of Yoga Therapists describes it as tailored to individual need, and as
treating a person as one integrated system. Mind, body, emotion and spirit, rather than a symptom in isolation.

What it does for mental health is quieten the mind enough that stress and anxiety become manageable, and create some internal room where things feel less pressured.

The difference from talking therapy is the interesting part.

Yoga therapy does not require you to go through your backstory. No history laid out, no past experiences examined. It works with you exactly as you are and addresses symptoms as they present, which means you are never reduced to a diagnostic label.

The International Association of Yoga Therapists frames the outcome in terms of what the person can then do for themselves. Apply the practices, and move towards better health under your own steam.

Really looking forward to these upcoming events. Which one is going in your diary?

First up, this coming Tuesday, we have the awesome Dr Stephanie Minchin @theyogapsychologist going through her 6 Codes for becoming a better leader & connecting to your purpose for @rebelliousorg Meetups, a free networking event at the brilliant @juntos_offices venue in Holborn. It's free to register on Meetup, but you must register to attend.

If you are around the Tufnell Park area of North London, you have to come and check out @downtoearthlondon Studio; it's a beautiful sanctuary opposite the station. I am covering a few singing bowl meditation classes there on Thursday evenings throughout September.

We also have some gong meditation events with @moreyoga_ . With my usual 45-minute class every Sunday at 6.15 in Finsbury Park and the special two-hour-long Saturday Sanctuary at Manor House studio.

Which one tickles your fancy? Let me know in the comments.

Yoga for anxiety: how breathwork shifts your nervous system.

Dr. Stephanie Minchin
Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist | The Yoga Psychologist
Specialisation: Trauma-Informed Practice, Yoga Therapy
Regulatory Body: HCPC | BPS
Based in: London, England

🧠Anxiety is a response to what is happening in your life. It is a defence network, and its job is to keep you safe.

The cost is hyper-arousal. A chaotic mind. Racing thoughts. Worry aimed permanently at the future. Tension held physically, usually in the shoulders and jaw.

Yoga psychology works on that directly, using breath and physiology to move the nervous system out of sympathetic arousal and into parasympathetic. It works with the vagus nerve to widen your window of tolerance.

Movement handles the physical residue. Joint releasing sequences. Progressive muscle relaxation.

Grounding postures do something more specific. Chair pose, forward folds, tree pose, mountain pose. They pull attention out of the head and into the lower body. Overthinking has less to hold on to when your weight is in your feet.

Yoga philosophy adds the chakra system, particularly the root chakra, muladhara, associated with safety and security. Attention practices such as calm place meditation train the mind to stay present.

The psychology integrates directly. CBT, CFT and ACT bring thought challenging, acceptance work, values exploration and attention training.

Ancient philosophy, modern psychology. A different route to a calmer mind and a body that is not braced.

Yesterday was a little heavy.

We heard some news that had us feeling a lot of sadness and shock but we decided not to overanalyse or try to fix anything and instead, met at the decks.

No dissecting the feeling. Just music, shared frequency, and the absolute freedom to let go, get things wrong, support each other, and dance 💃

Silence and stillness are powerful, but today, our medicine was sound, rhythm, and each other.

I would love to hear what you do to get you out of a funk. Let me know in the comments! 💛

@rachael_welford @theyogapsychologist you are ❤️‍🔥
