🧠 Understanding the relationship between yoga, trauma and nervous system regulation.

Dr. Stephanie Minchin
Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist | The Yoga Psychologist
Specialisation: Trauma-Informed Practice, Yoga Therapy
Regulatory Body: HCPC | BPS
Based in: London, England

The amygdala plays an important role in detecting threats and initiating the body’s protective response. Following trauma, this response can become more sensitive, contributing to heightened vigilance and reactivity.
In this reel, Dr. Stephanie Minchin explores how chanting, breathing and movement may influence the brain’s stress response. She discusses the role of vagal pathways, GABA and the prefrontal cortex in understanding yoga’s potential contribution to emotional regulation.
🧘Yoga may offer complementary support for mental wellbeing, with individual needs and experiences guiding its use.

What is yoga therapy? It works differently to talking therapy.

Dr. Stephanie Minchin
Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist | The Yoga Psychologist
Specialisation: Trauma-Informed Practice, Yoga Therapy
Regulatory Body: HCPC | BPS
Based in: London, England

🧠Yoga therapy was first defined in the 1920s by Kuvalayananda, who argued that medical conditions could be treated at both the physical and the physiological level.

The British Council of Yoga Therapists describes it as tailored to individual need, and as
treating a person as one integrated system. Mind, body, emotion and spirit, rather than a symptom in isolation.

What it does for mental health is quieten the mind enough that stress and anxiety become manageable, and create some internal room where things feel less pressured.

The difference from talking therapy is the interesting part.

Yoga therapy does not require you to go through your backstory. No history laid out, no past experiences examined. It works with you exactly as you are and addresses symptoms as they present, which means you are never reduced to a diagnostic label.

The International Association of Yoga Therapists frames the outcome in terms of what the person can then do for themselves. Apply the practices, and move towards better health under your own steam.

Yoga for anxiety: how breathwork shifts your nervous system.

Dr. Stephanie Minchin
Clinical Psychologist and Yoga Therapist | The Yoga Psychologist
Specialisation: Trauma-Informed Practice, Yoga Therapy
Regulatory Body: HCPC | BPS
Based in: London, England

🧠Anxiety is a response to what is happening in your life. It is a defence network, and its job is to keep you safe.

The cost is hyper-arousal. A chaotic mind. Racing thoughts. Worry aimed permanently at the future. Tension held physically, usually in the shoulders and jaw.

Yoga psychology works on that directly, using breath and physiology to move the nervous system out of sympathetic arousal and into parasympathetic. It works with the vagus nerve to widen your window of tolerance.

Movement handles the physical residue. Joint releasing sequences. Progressive muscle relaxation.

Grounding postures do something more specific. Chair pose, forward folds, tree pose, mountain pose. They pull attention out of the head and into the lower body. Overthinking has less to hold on to when your weight is in your feet.

Yoga philosophy adds the chakra system, particularly the root chakra, muladhara, associated with safety and security. Attention practices such as calm place meditation train the mind to stay present.

The psychology integrates directly. CBT, CFT and ACT bring thought challenging, acceptance work, values exploration and attention training.

Ancient philosophy, modern psychology. A different route to a calmer mind and a body that is not braced.

🧠Three things stop people trying yoga. None of them are true.

You have to be flexible. If you have a body and a mind, some part of yoga is already available to you. The physical practice is one of eight limbs. Flexibility is a possible outcome, not an entry requirement.

You need an empty mind to meditate. A busy mind is not a disqualification, it is the material. Meditation is a skill you practise, not a state you achieve. Some days go better than others, because minds vary day to day. That is the practice working normally.

You have to be spiritual. Yoga is rooted in ancient Eastern traditions and that origin deserves respect. It is not prescriptive to one religion, faith or culture. The practice can stay open to everyone without being cut loose from where it came from.
Most people who decide yoga is not for them have been measuring themselves against a version of it that does not exist.

Here’s your reminder that connecting to pleasure, play and joy are also about perspective.

It’s time for Real talk.

When I led the Embodied Coaching Circle for the members this month, I invited them to set intentions and commitments to play more, and specify what that looked like.

Alongside members doing this, I wrote my own list. One of the play dates I really craved was going on a water slide.

So this weekend, back with family, whilst life has been lifing. I did exactly that. Took myself to the local lido.

This swimming pool was an anchor to me three years ago, when I needed a baltic plunge to help me regulate my way through anticipatory grief at the time. It also feels nostalgic, summers spent here as a kid, splashing, playing, carefree.

After a few hours of sunbathing and deep adulting catch ups with tears and laughter, my friend asked, ‘Shall we go in the water now?’.
‘YES!, Let’s go on the slide!’ I shouted in glee.
She looked shocked.
I notice my adult responsible self ask ‘Is that allowed?’ as I saw the queue of children queueing for the same enjoyment.
But to be honest, even if it wasn’t allowed, I would have done it anyway. I love my rebellious part for that.
Turns out we were the last ones out of the water, as the lifeguards called time and we wanted ‘one more go’!

The point of me sharing this is to encourage you to find the moments of joy and make them sacred. Even when life through s h 1 t at you. Because we all know, it will.

Life does not have to be ‘perfect’, ‘in alignment’ and ‘shiny jazz-hands happy’ to create micro-moments of pleasure.

Life’s challenges do not have to steal your joy. You are allowed to play, the only person who needs to say YES is yourself.

Even when life is hard, can you choose joy anyway? Make it messy, make it imperfect, but whatever you do, still make it.

What play date are you taking your inner child on?

Not everyone comes to therapy saying, "I've experienced trauma."

Sometimes they come because they're burnt out. Anxious. Overwhelmed. Disconnected from themselves or the life they're living.

And sometimes, with enough safety, curiosity, and care, a deeper story begins to emerge.

In this conversation, Dr. Stephanie Minchin ( @houseofyogapsychology ) reflects on the quiet ways trauma can reveal itself. Not always through a single defining event, but through the cumulative experiences that shape our nervous system, our relationships, and the ways we've learned to survive.

Rather than asking, "What's wrong with me?" this episode invites a different question: What has my body been carrying that I've never had the chance to truly acknowledge? Because so often, healing begins not with fixing ourselves, but with finally understanding ourselves.

🧠The most common reason people give up on meditation before it has had a chance to work is the belief that they are doing it wrong. They expect their mind to go quiet. When it does not, they assume they are not suited to it.

This is a misunderstanding of what meditation actually is. The mind wandering during practice is not a failure. Noticing that it has wandered, and choosing to bring attention back to the present moment, is the practice itself. That redirecting of attention is the skill being trained. The
Sanskrit words dharana and dhyana, which translate roughly as focus and concentration, describe exactly what meditation develops over time.

Like any other skill, it improves with consistent repetition and produces different results on different days. There is no certificate at the end, no point at which you have mastered it, and no requirement to sit in any particular position or hold any particular beliefs to benefit from it. The brain's natural tendency is to move between past events and future concerns. Meditation is a structured way of training it to return to the here and now, and even brief, daily practice builds that capacity over time.

The summer heat is rising, and so are our vibrations in the House… The question is are you ready? And can you handle it?!

The last few weekends I have spent dancing. Non stop. Some sober, some less so. Some singing my heart out to Take That, some sacred sisterhood circles between tears, rage and laughter and some late night raves.

Solstice energy was strong, and whilst it brought some very hard confronting things, it also gave rise to a massive inner shift. Because your capacity to hold joy is only as big as your capacity to hold pain. Read that again. Let it land.

Between the local lads doing a tops-off party in the park and festival season coming into full hype, the longer days and summer sun is inviting us into something so much bigger….

Does anyone else still think that it’s ‘school holiday’ season, even though you’re an adult and still have duties and responsibilities?! And is that not the call of the inner child, yearning for freedom, craving playdates in the park, desiring dance, rolling in the grass and eating all of the 99s (which are so not 99p anymore!).

Inside the House, for the month of July, we are answering the call of our inner child and connecting our Yoga Psychology practices to unfiltered, unrestricted full fat PLEASURE, PLAY & JOY!

If you are ready to choose play over productivity, re-discover what it means to feel deeply alive and have fun, join us inside the Embodied Entrepreneur Circle membership - YOU ARE INVITED!
