076 Escalator Cycle (The Tate Modern @tate ) I - ft. @thirdcoastpercussion (90s edit, full version available).

Every time a stair step or person’s head crosses the pink line a note is played.

This is a 6 part score for piano, vibraphone, xylophone and drums. Part of the Cycle series.

It was all wonderfully played live using the video as the score by David from @thirdcoastpercussion

Speaking of which, Third Coast Percussion are performing live in London on October 31 at Milton Court, presented by @barbicancentre. What a nice coincidence! Maybe they could visit the escalator…

Notes from the score:

All rhythms are dictated by the stairs and when people’s heads cross the pink line.

The accent of the piece is on the 1 and 3 beat which lines up with when the right stairs cross the line.

I imagine all instruments to be locked in with that accent/pulse throughout.

Xylophone

Follow the left escalator rhythm. The notated rhythm illustrates the offset at the start of the piece then you’ll see the left escalator gradually falls in sync with the right escalator

Vibraphone

Played notated rhythm. When a person’s head on the LEFT escalator crosses the line improv around pentatonic. Whenever someone is holding a phone, it gets more
chromatic, passing tones, tri-tone or parallel major substitutes, up to you, whatever feels right in that moment, however you feel about that person.

Marimba

Played notated rhythm. When a person’s head on the RIGHT escalator crosses the line improv roughly around pentatonic. Whenever someone is holding a phone, it gets more chromatic, passing tones, tri-tone or parallel major substitutes, up to you, whatever feels right in that moment, however you feel about that person.

Drums Tight

smooth jazz kit vibe. The rim or wood hit syncs with the stairs on the RIGHT. The
drums then accent everybody crossing the line from both sides. Fills get louder and
more complicated if someone has a phone. If someone is running do a fill.

Piano

Play as notated. Left hand adds subtle passing tones or reharms when a person has a phone.
