Happy 90th to the one and only Steve Reich!

He was one of the first composers whose music we ever played. We won a Grammy for a recording of his music. And to this day we play his music on probably half the concerts we play.

You changed the game forever, Steve. Thanks for all that you’ve done for percussionists, musicians, and fans everywhere!

Ustad Zakir Hussain was one of the greatest performers of our time, and while his instrument was the tabla, time was his canvas, and he was able to find extraordinary beauty in the complexities of rhythm, as he does in this work he composed for tabla and percussion ensemble, Murmurs in Time.
In this first movement of the piece, Zakirji asked us to recite bols
—the syllables that represent different sounds on the tabla. He was kind and patient as he taught us...and he only made fun of our Chicago accent once
We will be forever grateful for the year we spent working with this absolutely extraordinary musician on this piece. His mind-blowing talent and musicality were matched only by his generosity as a collaborator and the infectious joy he brought to his work and to his life.
It’s an honor to share in performances of this piece with one of Zakirji’s disciples, our friend the extraordinarily talented @salar_system

How @tigranhamasyan music is notated, to show how he overlaps different rhythmic subdivisions in his music.

Even if you’re not a musician, the concept is fairly simple…every measure of music has a certain number of beats. Some music has 4 beats per measure so you count “1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4” etc. In this piece by Tigran, there are 23 beats in a measure. If you cut the beats in half, that’s 46 half beats per measure. 46 can be divided up in a lot of ways…you can see in this video how each player divides up their 46 half beats (look at the little numbers above each line of music).

The result is awesome groovy super unpredictable music 😎
