Parks are infrastructure for healthy, vibrant communities. This session highlights the partnership behind East 14th Street/Mateo Street Park, a project bringing over four acres of new, amenity-rich park space to Ashland, an unincorporated, park-deficient community in Alameda County.

At #CALRC2026, Peter Trio joins @hayward_rec and @trustforpublicland to unpack the practical realities behind implementation: land acquisition, grassroots community engagement, a funding strategy leveraging State resources, and environmental cleanup sequenced alongside design, transforming recycled infill land into a model for equitable park creation.

In the heart of the vibrant East Bay, Ashland Zócalo is more than just new green space — it's a celebration of Ashland's diverse cultures and community spirit! 🎉 Join us for the grand opening tomorrow, July 17th at 2:00 PM.

Over the past 20 years, Ashland’s Hispanic/Latino and Asian populations have grown by nearly 70%, enriching this community with vibrant traditions and perspectives. With this growth, Ashland is one of the most densely populated areas in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a pressing need for more green spaces.

To address this, the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) and the Trust for Public Land (TPL) teamed up with the community to create Ashland Zócalo, a new central gathering place for all to enjoy. 🌳

We are excited to announce that Reimagine San Geronimo Vision Framework won the @asla.norcal Merit Award!

In 2018, TPL undertook a massive effort to reimagine a former 157-acre golf course in San Geronimo Valley to a new use that prioritizes conservation, habitat and creek restoration, wildlife connections, nature interpretation, passive recreation, and community spaces.

WRT led the preparation of the Vision Framework, and an intense and involved stakeholder/community engagement process. The Vision Framework establishes a broad planning foundation to guide future uses of the San Geronimo Commons, with the primary goals to restore its ecological health and resilient functions, support public access including multi-use trails and compatible recreational uses, and make space for a Marin County fire station and community-serving amenities in appropriate locations.

Today, thanks to the continued work of @esassoc , @troutunlimited , and @trustforpublicland , a constrained creek is restored to braided channels that support endangered salmon fisheries. The former golf course is now a meadow and host to a healthy upstream food web ecosystem.

#tbt to our collaborative installation at the Albany Bulb: a former landfill, turned spontaneous artist/homeless community (who were subsequently evicted by the city). Though the community no longer lives here, the land still encourages spontaneous, ad-hoc, trash/plant/art, that pops up from time to time. Plans to make this into a ‘formalized park’ are imminent, and with it, the possible loss of a space to create and commune without that ‘dead hand of authority hanging over you’ (Osha Nuemann). How can we allow for spontaneity and a sense of REAL public ownership of public space, while creating an accessible, safe space for ALL? #urbanwildasla
