Parks are infrastructure for healthy, vibrant communities. This session highlights the partnership behind East 14th Street/Mateo Street Park, a project bringing over four acres of new, amenity-rich park space to Ashland, an unincorporated, park-deficient community in Alameda County.

At #CALRC2026, Peter Trio joins @hayward_rec and @trustforpublicland to unpack the practical realities behind implementation: land acquisition, grassroots community engagement, a funding strategy leveraging State resources, and environmental cleanup sequenced alongside design, transforming recycled infill land into a model for equitable park creation.

Collaborating with my close friend at @sage_and_bay we shaped this garden retreat as a lush, intimate escape for the resident and his dog. The deck extends directly from the primary bedroom, with shaded seating and a seamless connection to the hot tub. Across the garden, a sunken lounge is carved into a concrete retaining wall, forming a cool microclimate wrapped in vegetation. The Japanese‑inspired deck floats above the landscape, and more than 500 square feet of salvaged concrete was repurposed as pavers, grounding the space in a warm, sustainable material palette.
