Today is the screening of the second edition of “Speculative Ecologies”, a side event of @viertewelleff. This short film program brings together works by directors from the FLINTA* community who explore the boundaries between the human and the non-human from different perspectives. They also explore the interaction between humans and technology, as well as multispecies transformations. Through their work, they conceive of alternative ways of living and coexisting, offering a glimpse into other possible worlds.

I’m happy to be in this edition:

Tissue, by Henna-Riikka Halonen
Caves of Our Insides, by Sabīne Šnē
Memories for an Unstable Future, by Sandrine Deumier
Becoming Bodily, by Sancha
Diatomata II, by Kayla Jean Smith
TR333, by April Forrest Lin
Elegy for the Upcoming Apocalypse, by Blue Naga

In a future where humanity has abandoned Earth, a stranded astronaut returns to the planet from which their species once emerged, only to discover that their body has become alien to this world.

A short film from Thailand (3’51’’), exploring ecological estrangement, human exceptionalism, and what it means to return home and no longer belong.

SPECULATIVE ECOLOGIES 2026 - POROSITIES | TRAILER 🌿

We are living in an age when the boundaries of the human body seem to be dissolving. The high concentrations of nanoplastics found in the human brain, a byproduct of extreme pollution, pose a challenge: rethink what boundaries mean, and see porosity as an opportunity to “stay with the trouble.”

Porosities starts from there: from the conviction that the boundaries separating the living from the inert, the organic from the technological, the individual from their environment, are primarily cultural constructs. Yet moving beyond these constructs allows us to see that these boundaries are permeable, that they blur and transmute.

Porosities is an invitation to speculate about life and companionship in possible worlds.

The program has been curated by Bárbara Bielitz (@laecha).

Inspired by the sacred timelessness of the redwoods and my incredible spring residency @creekside.arts , I created The Offering Tree, an art installation for Creekside in Bloom and @ncopenstudios. The installation was in a forest clearing with vibrant panels by @laurieshapiroart hung overhead, and the site of a powerful performance piece by @carissalillianclark

Words are not enough to convey how special the residency was to me, so I created this ❤️ Following is the sign for visitors that accompanied the work:
—
This installation of collages is my heartfelt offering of gratitude to the wonderful people of Creekside Arts, the special community that surrounds it, and the natural beauty that nourishes us all. Please take a collage with my blessing!

The 40 mini-collages are made with papers I painted myself and hung with hemp cord. Each collage is inscribed with a line from the Metta meditation, or loving-kindness meditation, a Buddhist practice for cultivating compassion for ourselves and others:

May I/you be safe.
May I/you be healthy.
May I/you be happy.
May I/you be full of peace.

My installation occupies and is woven into the historical traces of an altar installation originally created by Creekside Arts residents Rick Gradone and Clementine (Wright) Zenner in 2023. The altar first served as a spiritual centerpiece for the residents’ community engagement project with Trajectory, a career development program for fine artists and artisans with disabilities, and later became a place for North Coast Open Studios visitors to offer their blessings and intentions.

Learning the history of my installation’s site only deepened my reverence for the generosity of spirit I have found here. It is my joy to carry this spirit forward.
—

Shout-outs and much affection to my fellow residents @thisbluecreature @carissalillianclark @janeszabophoto @laurieshapiroart and @kangminlim_art . Also of course to @creekside.arts @calderbullwinkle @tanyabullwinkle 🫶🏽🫶🏽
Special thanks to @rickgradoneprojects and @clementine_zen_clay_ 🙏🏽🙏🏽

See the work by two Class of 2026 MFA @wisalumni, two MFA Candidates, and two local Madison artists on display during the @overturegalleries Summer 2026 exhibitions opening tomorrow, June 9th through August 30th! Attend the reception on Thursday, June 25th from 5:30-8:30pm, with the Artist Talks starting at 6pm on the Rotunda Stage.

In the exhibition Echoes Between Us in Gallery I, MFA alumna @fatemehhh_faniii & @artist.rlo21 create work that “echoes memories emerging from a shrouded haze.” Through a variety of media, they transform pain into resonance that invites viewers to recognize what often passes unnoticed.

For the exhibition Natural Bodies in Gallery II, MFA Candidates @thisbluecreature and @cielskal blur the boundaries between the human body and the natural world. This exhibition reflects on the intimacy and solidarity between the environment and the feminine experience, while tracing the layered histories that have shaped how both land and body are perceived, valued and inhabited.

And in the exhibition Shadow Work in Gallery III, the works of MFA alumna @1889__lover and @chele.ramos.7 explore the realms unseen by the naked eye; behind shadows lie places unexplored, whether in the mind, memory or earth.

This Saturday, May 10th at 12:30pm, it’s Live from the @meadwitterschoolofmusic: The Planets, a piano duo by @deirdre.brenner and @sibila_konstantinova, including original film works by @_blakebarit, Charlie Borowicz, Philip Denvir, @tjhill, and MFA Candidates @clawdeeaw, @tinathemaker, and @thisbluecreature.

In the wake of @nasa’s recent journey around the far side of the moon, pianists Deirdre Brenner and Sibila Konstantinova present a multimedia performance exploring our collective relationship to the galaxy. The concert combines the original 2-piano version of the celebrated seven movement work, The Planets, by composer Gustav Holst (composed prior to the better known orchestral version), with a world-premiere 2-piano arrangement by @dobrinka_tabakova of “Tectonic” from her Earth Suite, composed originally in 2018 for the @bbc Concert Orchestra.

Each movement of the program will be presented alongside an original video exploring the ideas which inspired these compositions. Tabakova writes, “the overwhelming force of Nature” is at the heart of the concept of her Earth Suite, while Holst was inspired by a deep interest in astrology.

This free event will also be streamed live, find out more at: music.wisc.edu/event/live-from-mwsom-the-planets/

Get details & reserve your seat at: art.wisc.edu/public-programs/

A Mexican American artist & educator from Yakima, Washington, currently based in Madison, Wisconsin, Christie Tirado draws inspiration from the rich tradition of relief block printing, her work explores the impact of migration on culture, identity, traditions, memories, & histories, with a particular focus on labor-related migration within Mexican diasporas. Deeply rooted in personal familial histories, her practice reflects how cultural memory is carried & translated across generations. Through cultural exploration & her artistic practice, her work examines the layered narratives of migration & how traditions remain alive through the ongoing practice of everyday rituals & embodied gestures.

Tirado earned her BA from @uofwa, her Master’s in Teaching from @hueagles, & is an Education Graduate Research Scholar completing her MFA in Printmaking at the @uwmadison. Previously, Tirado served as a project assistant at @uwt&empress. Her artwork has been exhibited & collected nationally at @uwt&empress, @tacomaartmuseum, @sanfranciscostate, @sonomastateuniversity, @sunvalleymuseum & @la_productora_grafica, among others, & has been featured in the news, including @highcountrynews, @propublica, & @wisconsinpublicradio.
